The IPL auction dynamics often force certain franchises to spend way more on a player than they originally intend to. It, unfortunately, puts enormous pressure on the cricketer to perform and when he fails to live up to the price tag, the franchises waste no time in releasing the player and freeing up some valuable bucks.
A total of 90 players were released ahead of the 16th edition of the tournament and out of which, there are some who earned more than 5 crores at the mega-auction 2022. Now, based on their form and impact in the recent tournaments, those players can eventually lose a lot of money and might end up getting sold for their base price at the upcoming auction in December. Who could be these cricketers? Let’s dissect!
5. Odean Smith
Being a fast-bowling all-rounder, Odean Smith is a handy option for any team. Thus, Punjab Kings spent six crores last year to sign the West Indian before the 15th edition of the IPL. However, the 26-year-old couldn't live up to the expectations and failed miserably in the cash-rich league.
Thus, with a new management now in charge, Kings decided to release the player ahead of the mini-auction. In six matches that he played in IPL 2022, Smith managed to pick only six wickets at an expensive economy rate of 11.87.
The team management handed him the responsibility to bowl in the death overs but the plan completely backfired. His performance with the bat was underwhelming too and resulted in him getting dropped from the playing XI first and from the squad later.
Since the IPL, the cricketer hasn’t proved his worth and is likely to go for his base price at the upcoming auction.
He could have changed his fortune during the recent T20 World Cup but Smith, like most his teammates, failed to capitalise on the incredible opportunity as the West Indies got knocked out of the First Round.
