Mayank Agarwal has been a run-bank at the Indian Premier League and has amassed 2327 runs in 113 matches at a strike rate of 134.28. However, the Indian batter was a pale shadow of his vintage self in the 2022 season of the lucrative T20 tournament and could only score 196 runs in 13 matches at a strike rate of 122.50.
PBKS had retained Mayank for a staggering sum of INR 14 crore and would have expected more from him. Given the 31-year-old failed to put on a show with the bat, the team management released him ahead of the IPL 2023 auction and freed up a huge chunk of money.
With Mayank not in the mix, the Punjab franchise will need a quality top-order batter, and thus, PBKS could look at Jadgeesan for that role. Typically an opener, the Tamil Nadu batter has shown his prowess to bat in the middle order as well. So, if Punjab opts to open with Shikhar Dhawan and Jonny Bairstow, the 26-year-old could be pushed down the order. With the Coimbatore-born offering such flexibility, the Punjab franchise could go hammer and tongs to pick him at the upcoming auction.
