The Indian Premier League (IPL) is the most prominent cricketing competition in the world. In 2022, it surpassed the English Premier League (EPL) and the National Basketball Association (NBA) to earn the second spot on the list of most lucrative sporting leagues. With a media rights valuation of INR 1075 million, it is only standing behind the National Football League (NFL) on the chart.
Mumbai Indians (MI) have emerged as the most successful franchise in the IPL. In terms of the trophy collection, they are sitting on top with five titles since 2020, and they also emerged as the most valuable IPL franchise as per a Forbes report published in April, last year. According to the American Business magazine, the Mumbai-based franchise has a valuation of $1.3 billion USD (INR 9968 crore approximately).

1. Media rights
In June 2022, the television rights for the Indian Premier League (IPL) were sold to Star Sports for a bid of INR 23,575 crore. Last year, Viacom 18 also purchased the media rights for the 2023-27 seasons for INR 23,758 crore, which amounts to INR 50 crore per game.
From the media rights, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) shares a huge chunk of money with the IPL teams. Among all franchises, the teams with higher ranks receive the larger share of media revenue. In the last 15 years, MI have emerged as a top-ranking IPL squad several times. Consequently, they have got a hefty amount through media rights.
For the last few years, the Mumbai-based team has also launched Mumbai Indians TV for their ardent supporters. Through the platform, fans engage with the franchise and provide some exciting updates related to their players and team. Besides that, MI is also active on YouTube with 2.9M subscribers along with social media platforms such as Facebook with 13.8M followers and Instagram with 11.6M followers, respectively.
