IPL 2023: Ranking top 10 Impact Player performances so far

The Indian Premier League has been the toughest league in the cricketing world. Even after being compared to other leagues, none come close to the IPL. The level of cricket and the toughness required to be relevant in the IPL is just way too high. This is the reason why the IPL has been so popular amongst the fans. Adding on, its unpredictability has been another factor that has helped to boost its popularity. This time around, the IPL has introduced the “Impact Player” rule, which is turning out to be a masterstroke. As most of the fans might be aware of the rule, this does allow the captain to have an extra bowling/batting option during the latter half of the first innings or the second innings as a whole. Thus far, we have witnessed numerous instrumental performances from the Impact Players. Let us look at the top 10 impact player performances so far in this edition of the IPL 10. It gives them the exposure that ordinary domestic tournaments are not able to provide. In almost all the teams, there is at least one player who has been able to grab the attention of the fans, and for Lucknow Super Giants, it is Ayush Badoni. In the 15th game of the 2023 edition of the IPL, while batting first, RCB went on to score 212 runs in their 20 overs. In reply, LSG had a shaky start as their top order failed to attack during the initial stage of the chase. However, Marcus Stoinis, Nicholas Pooran, and Ayush Badoni went on to score vital runs during the chase. Badoni was introduced in the chase as an impact player, and he went on to score 30 runs from 24 balls. His efforts were crucial as Pooran needed proper support from the other end, which Badoni provided. 9. Shubman Gill (49 from 35 balls) vs Kolkata Knight Riders Shubman Gill. The stylish opener has been in fine touch and has been a strong opener in all formats of the game. With the ODI World Cup coming up, Gill will be an important player for team India. Talking about the importance, Gill has been a part of an exciting opening pair with Wriddhiman Saha. During the 39th match of the IPL, the Kolkata Knight Riders had put up a decent total of 179 runs in 20 overs. Rahmanullah Gurbaz top-scored for the home team with 81 runs from 39 balls. The defending champions had to start strongly, and that is exactly what they did. Thanks to Gill’s 49 runs from 35 balls, the Titans were off to a great start. Later on, Vijay Shankar and David Miller added the finishing touch to help their team to cross the victory line. 8. Jason Roy (38 runs from 24 balls) vs Punjab Kings Jason Roy. Recently, this idea of an Impact Player was on display as Jason Roy tore into the Punjab fast bowling lineup. In the end, the Knight Riders managed to pick up valuable two points. While batting first, the Punjab Kings managed to put up 179 runs in 20 overs. Shikhar Dhawan, Rishi Dhawan, Shahrukh Khan, and Harpreet Brar were the stars for Punjab as they managed to put up a decent total on the board. However, things changed when Jason Roy came in as the impact player. Roy smashed 38 runs from 24 balls to give the home side a perfect start. He was able to hit eight boundaries in his innings. With a strike rate of 158.33, he was the perfect Impact Player Kolkata could have asked for in this situation. 7. Prabhsimran Singh (42 from 24 balls) vs CSK Prabhsimran Singh and Shikhar Dhawan. But, for Punjab Kings, things were a bit different this time. During the 41st game of this edition of IPL, Chennai Super Kings went on all guns blazing as they managed to post 200 runs in the first innings. For the home side, Devon Conway was the star of the innings as he managed to score 92* runs from 52 balls. The Chepauk crowd was treated to a Dhoni special as the adopted son of Chennai smashed 13* runs from 4 balls. There was no doubt that Punjab had to start strongly. Thankfully, Prabhsimran Singh was their man of the moment as he smashed 42 runs from 24 balls. During his innings, he ensured that the fast bowlers never settled while scoring at a strike rate of 175, just like a perfect impact player. 6. The young lad has been a phenomenal addition to Kolkata’s spin arsenal. He has been complimenting the spin duo of Varun Chakravarthy and Sunil Narine so far. Suyash was the perfect Impact Player Kolkata could have asked for during their encounter with the Royal Challengers Bangalore. While batting first, Kolkata put up 204 runs in the first innings. In reply, the RCB openers were off to a great start as the first wicket fell on 4.5th over with 44 runs on the board.Post that, Suyash Sharma came in and picked up crucial wickets in the middle phase of the run chase. In his four overs, Suyash gave away just 30 runs and picked up three wickets. With an economy rate of 7.50, Suyash proved his worth in the game. 5. On almost every occasion, the attacking batter has been able to shut down his doubters with the bat. During the 47th game of the IPL, he did exactly the same. While batting first, Kolkata Knight Riders managed to put up 171 runs. During the first innings, Nitish Rana, Rinku Singh, and Andre Russell were the stars of the batting side. However, while chasing, the Sunrisers were off to a poor start once again. But Rahul Tripathi was the saviour for them during his brief yet impactful stay on the crease. Rahul went on to smash 20 runs from just nine balls during the chase. Unfortunately for the Sunrisers, Aiden Markram was not able to guide them home with his innings of 41 runs from 40 balls. 4. Harshal Patel (32/3 in four overs) vs Rajasthan Royals Harshal Patel. These bowlers have gained experience by playing the IPL over the years. One of the most famous names in the pool is Harshal Patel. Patel has been able to improve his bowling thanks to the management team of the Royal Challengers Bangalore. With more chances, Patel has been able to showcase his variations with the ball. In the 2023 edition, during the 32nd game of the tournament, he was instrumental in RCB’s victory against RR. While chasing a huge target of 190, RR were the favourites as Yashasvi Jaiswal and Devdutt Padikkal were smashing the RCB bowlers all around the park. Adding on, Dhruv Jurel was playing a phenomenal knock as well. However, Patel came in as the impact player and picked up three crucial wickets of Jaiswal, Samson, and Ashwin, because of which RCB managed to beat RR. 3. Anukul Roy (2/19 in four overs) vs Delhi Capitals Anukul Roy (Source: BCCI/ IPL) Anukul Roy is one of the best fielders in the KKR setup. The all-rounder can bat and bowl at any stage of the game. During his time with the Mumbai Indians, the youngster hardly got any chance to be a part of the regular playing XI. But fortunately, Anukul has been a decent addition to the Knight Riders squad. The management has backed him as an impact player for the side. During the game against Delhi Capitals, Anukul managed to choke the DC batsmen with his slow bowling. In his four overs, Anukul gave away just 19 runs and picked up a couple of wickets. Thanks to him, KKR was able to get rid of Phil Salt and Manish Pandey. Adding on, an economy rate of four runs per over is priceless in this format. 2. Dhruv Jurel (32 from 15 balls) vs Punjab Kings Dhruv Jurel. Jurel has thrown his hat into the contention of becoming the next big finisher for the Indian Cricket team. All the credit goes to the Rajasthan talent scouting team for picking up a gem like Jurel.His attacking skills were on full display during the eight games of the tournament. While batting first, Punjab managed to score 197 runs in 20 overs. Shikhar Dhawan and Prabhsimran Singh were the stars for the Punjab side as both scored fluent half-centuries. In reply, Rajasthan were off to a shaky start as their top order fumbled during the start of the innings. However, this did not stop Jurel from playing an attacking inning. The youngster smashed 32* runs from 15 balls with three boundaries and two sixes with a strike rate of 213.33. 1. Venkatesh Iyer (83 runs off 40 balls) vs Gujarat Titans Venkatesh Iyer. The southpaw has the ability to take the game away from the opposition within a span of a few overs. Iyer has the ability to play risk-free shots and score at a brisk pace. During the 13th game of this edition, the Knight Riders were chasing a huge total of 204 against a strong Gujarat Titans squad. Unfortunately, for KKR, they were off to a poor start as they lost both their openers within four overs. Thankfully for them, Iyer was there to rescue them as their impact player. Iyer smashed 83 runs from just 40 balls. During his innings, he went on to smash eight boundaries and five sixes. His strike rate of 207.50 laid the foundation for Rinku Singh to finish the game off in dramatic fashion.
