IPL 2023: Top 5 bowling performances from first week
These bowlers were sensational in the opening week of the marquee event.
1. Mark Wood’s 5/14 vs Delhi Capitals (DC)
Beginning their IPL 2023 campaign at home, Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) got a terrific start against Delhi Capitals (DC). At the Ekana Cricket Stadium, DC skipper David Warner won the toss and chose to field first. Kyle Mayers and Nicholas Pooran chipped in with their sensational knocks of 73 (38) and 36 (21) and helped Super Giants to assemble 193 runs in the end for the loss of six wickets.
Emboldened by their batting performance, LSG exuded confidence in their bowling as well. Mark Wood, who made the debut for the franchise, bowled with confidence and wrecked DC’s star-studded batting unit. Bowling his first over, he snared the scalps of Prithvi Shaw and Mitchell Marsh on back-to-back deliveries.
After clinching both wickets, he got more aggressive and fetched a fifer with the wickets of Sarfaraz Khan, Axar Patel, and Chetan Sakariya. The 33-year-old’s disciplined bowling forced Capitals to surrender in front of Super Giants, scoring only 143/9 in their reply. For his marvellous bowling figures, Wood also got the Player of the Match award.
