IPL 2023: Top 5 bowling performances from second week

The second week of the 16th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) was done and dusted on April 14. Teams have given their sweat and blood whenever they have turned for a game and courtesy of which, fans have witnessed some absolute nail-biters. After two weeks of enthralling cricket, Rajasthan Royals are at the top of the table while Delhi Capitals are languishing at the bottom of the standings. In the second week of the T20 extravaganza, certain bowlers rose to the occasion and left the cricket fraternity in awe of their remarkable performances. Let us look at the top five bowling displays of the week. 5. Trent Boult vs Delhi Capitals (4-1-29-3) Rajasthan Royals took the stage alongside Delhi Capitals in the 11th match of the 2023 season of the cash-rich league. Delhi won the toss and elected to bowl first. Jos Buttler and Yashasvi Jaiswal were in their element and helped Rajasthan pile on a mammoth total of 199 runs on the board. Defending the target of 200, Trent Boult put up a swing bowling masterclass and set the tone with the ball by getting rid of Prithvi Shaw and Manish Pandey in the first over of the innings. Then in the 13th over, the left-arm pacer sent Lalit Yadav back into the hut to dent DC’s progress. Boult ended the game with superb figures of 4-1-29-3. Yuzvendra Chahal too was sensational with the ball and bagged a three-wicket haul. Eventually, the Capitals could only manage 142 runs in 20 overs and Sanju Samson & Co. won the game by 57 runs. 4. Piyush Chawla vs Delhi Capitals (4-0-22-3) Delhi Capitals cross swords against Mumbai Indians in the 16th match of the T20 carnival at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. Mumbai won the toss and skipper Rohit Sharma decided to put DC into bat. Delhi had a brisk start and were 75 for 1 in eight overs with the partnership of David Warner and Manish Pandey looking promising. Capitals were on track to post a daunting total on the board and Mumbai badly needed a wicket. Piyush Chawla did just what the skipper ordered and removed Manish in the ninth over. The ace spinner also dismissed Rovman Powell and Lalit Yadav to put his team in the pole position. He registered stellar figures of 4-0-22-3. Eventually, Delhi were bowled out for 172 runs in 20 overs riding on Axar Patel's majestic half-century. Mumbai in response, hunted down the total in the last ball of the game and Rohit was adjudged the Player of the Match for his incredible knock of 65 runs off 45 deliveries. 3. Ravindra Jadeja vs Mumbai Indians (4-0-20-3) Mumbai Indians squared off against Chennai Super Kings in the 12th match of IPL 2023 at the Wankhede Stadium. Chennai won the toss and opted to field. Mumbai had an outstanding powerplay and hammered 61 runs in six overs at a loss of one wicket. MS Dhoni needed players to raise their hands and provide a breakthrough. The CSK skipper handed the ball to Ravindra Jadeja and the ace all-rounder struck in his very first over, getting rid of Ishan Kishan. In his following overs, the 34-year-old also dismissed Cameron Green and Tilak Varma. Mitchell Santner complemented Jadeja beautifully and bagged two wickets. Courtesy of the bowling displays from the ace spinners, MI could only manage 157 runs in 20 overs. CSK in response chased down the total in 18.1 overs with seven wickets in hand. 2. Krunal Pandya vs Sunrisers Hyderabad (4-0-18-3) Lucknow Super Giants locked horns with Sunrisers Hyderabad in the 10th match of the ongoing edition of the T20 extravaganza. SRH won the toss and skipper Aiden Markram decided to bat first. Krunal Pandya was at the top of the game and proved to be too hot to handle for the Hyderabad batting unit. Krunal strangled opposition batters with his impeccable line and length and provided his side with early breakthroughs. He sent Anmolpreet Singh, Mayank Agarwal, and Markram back into the hut and left Sunrisers reeling at 50 for 3 in eight overs. The 32-year-old finished the game with magnificent figures of 4-0-18-3. At the end of 20 overs, the Hyderabad franchise could only score 121 runs. Lucknow in response drove home with ease in 16 overs. Krunal was brilliant with the bat too and played a brisk knock of 34 runs off 23 deliveries. The southpaw was handed the Player of the Match award for his terrific all-round performance. 1. Mayank Markande vs Punjab Kings (4-0-15-4) Sunrisers Hyderabad and Punjab Kings took center stage in the 14th match of the 16th IPL edition at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium. Hyderabad won the toss and decided to field first. Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Marco Jansen were excellent with the new ball and left SRH in a tricky situation at 22 for 3. After the Hyderabad pacers showed their class, Mayank Markande, who was playing his first game for the franchise weaved his magic and bamboozled batters with his variations. He bagged an astonishing four-wicket haul and reduced Punjab to a score of 88 for 9. It required a jaw-dropping knock from Shikhar Dhawan to propel PBKS to a respectable total of 143 in 20 overs. After a sensational effort from the SRH bowlers, Rahul Tripathi (74* runs off 48 deliveries) led the way with the bat and helped his team cross the line in 17.1 overs.
