IPL 2024: 10 Blunders from the auction

Following the IPL 2024 Auction, some teams may be pleased with their acquisitions, while others may be dissatisfied with the players they received for the forthcoming tournament in March. However, once the franchises purchased 72 players in total, the teams looked nothing like they did before the auction. While it is impossible to identify a team that fared the best or the worst in the IPL 2024 Auction because performance will be the ultimate judge, it is worth taking a look at how they did when putting their squads together on paper. In this article, we take a look at some setbacks and blunders committed by the franchises on the auction table. Here are the team-wise blunders from the IPL 2024 auction: 1. Chennai Super Kings CSK Auction Panel. (Photo Source: IPL/BCCI) Chennai Super Kings had a decently good IPL 2024 auction. Their most expensive pick was Daryl Mitchell at INR 14 Cr and they got Rachin Ravindra at only INR 1.8 Cr, for a steal. They also bought uncapped Sameer Rizvi for INR 8.4 Cr and got a bang death overs bowler in Mustafizur Rahman for the base price. However, they had come into the auction with one goal, to get a very good and experienced Indian batter to replace Ambati Rayudu. Many expected CSK to go after Manish Pandey or Karun Nair to fill that void. However, instead of going for someone experienced, they have paid a bomb to an unknown Rizvi on the back of a good UP T20 league season. 2. Mumbai Indians Rohit Sharma and Piyush Chawla (Photo Source: MI/Twitter) Mumbai Indians had a brilliant time at the auction table as they bought pacer Gerald Coetzee for INR 5 crore, a pair of Sri Lankan pacers in Dilshan Madushanka and Nuwan Thushara, Mohammad Nabi and Shreyas Gopal. They had their plans on the paper for the auction and executed them almost perfectly. However, one spot where they missed was buying a quality Indian or overseas finger spinner. They have two wrist spin options in Piyush Chawla and Shreyas Gopal and a mystery spinner in Kumar Karthikeya. But they had released Hrithik Shokeen and didn’t go for him in the auction, leaving their combination a bit skewed. 3. Royal Challengers Bangalore Wanindu Hasaranga (Photo Source: Devesh/Twitter) RCB has always been criticised for not having a decent pacer attack. But this time in the IPL 2024 auction, the franchise filled their squad with quality pace options. They bought Alzarri Joseph, Yash Dayal, Lockie Ferguson, and Tom Curran to assist Mohammed Siraj and Reece Topley amongst others. However, they did not opt to go for a specialist spinner to replace Wanindu Hasaranga. They have spin options in Karn Sharma, Mayank Dagar, Himanshu Sharma, and Saurav Chauhan, but none have the match-winning quality that Hasaranga had. 4. Gujarat Titans Mitchell Starc (Photo Source: Twitter) Gujarat Titans spent INR 10 Cr on young Australia pacer Spencer Johnson and got Umesh Yadav and Kartik Tyagi to bolster their pace attack. They got Azmatullah Omarzai for cheap as a replacement for Hardik Pandya. And added some big-hitting power in Shahrukh Khan. However, GT only has two wicketkeepers, Wriddhiman Saha and Matthew Wade. They could’ve gone for another Indian keeper as a backup, which could help them fit Kane Williamson in the playing XI. They also tried their best to get Mitchell Starc but had to bow out at the last minute. 5. Lucknow Super Giants Mark wood. (Photo Source: BCCI/IPL) LSG had done half of their job before the IPL 2024 auction as they traded in Devdutt Padikkal from RR to bolster their batting. They also got Shivam Mavi, David Willey, and Arshin Kulkarni to give strength to their pace unit. However, their biggest miss could be not going for a few experienced Indian pacers as their bowling looks heavily dependent on Mark Wood and Mohsin Khan. Another Indian pacer with Mavi could’ve helped lessen the burden a bit. 6. Punjab Kings Shahrukh Khan (Photo Source: Twitter) Punjab Kings paid INR 11.75 Crs to Harshal Patel and picked Rilee Russouw and Chris Woakes for handsome amounts as well. However, PBKS and captain Shikhar Dhawan will have a headache when it comes to choosing the side as they have multiple overseas players vying for a particular spot. They also haven’t had a finisher since releasing Shahrukh Khan. 7. Kolkata Knight Riders Rahmanullah Gurbaz Batting. ( Photo Source :BCCI/IPL) KKR made history by buying Mitchell Starc for INR 24.75 Cr, making him the most expensive buy in IPL history. However, their auction didn’t go as well as they might have thought. A big issue for them is their batting as they rely too much on Rahmanullah Gurbaz at the top and their Indian pacers do not have much experience. Another glaring hole in their batting is the lack of depth. Though they have bought Sherfane Rutherford and Ramandeep Singh to fill that finisher’s role, both of them are unproven entities under the pressure of IPL. Starc will have to guide young pacers like Vaibhav Arora and Harshit Rana along with Chetan Sakariya. 8. Sunrisers Hyderabad Kavya Maran and Pat Cummins. (Photo Source: X(Twitter) Out of all the ten franchises, SRH seemed to have an almost perfect IPL 2024 auction. Sunrisers out-bid four other teams to get Pat Cummins for a whopping INR 20.5, while Wanindu Hasaranga was a steal at his base price. They also got Travis Head for under INR 10 Cr and he will most probably open the innings for them. It might seem nitpicking but paying almost INR 21 Cr for Pat Cummins seems too excessive, but then this might solve their problem of who will captain them. Aiden Markram did the job last season, but with Cummins leading Australia to World Cup glory, he might be given the reins in the IPL as well. 9. Rajasthan Royals Riyan Parag. (Photo Source: BCCI/IPL) Rajasthan Royals spent almost 90% of their money on their first two buys in Rovman Powell and Shubham Dubey. This left them with barely anything to plug gaps in their squad. The biggest hole in their combination is the lack of a proper all-rounder, apart from Riyan Parag. They needed a decent all-rounder, foreign or Indian to take that spot, but they couldn’t due to lack of funds. Their squad size of 22 is the smallest among the ten teams. 10. Delhi Capitals Rishabh Pant. (Photo Source: Twitter) Delhi Capitals went on a buying spree of wicketkeepers probably as a backup for Rishabh Pant, who is set to make a comeback with IPL 2024. They bought Shai Hope, Tristan Stubbs, Ricky Bhui, and Kumar Kushagra as backup wicketkeepers. However, this will not solve their brittle batting unit which relies on Mitchell Marsh and David Warner. Prithvi Shaw is struggling with fitness and form and their middle order cries for some experience. There is also a lack of backup openers in case Shaw fails to perform.
