The second week of the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL) witnessed exceptional performances from overseas players such as Sunil Narine, Andre Russell, Quinton de Kock, Trent Boult, and Nicholas Pooran. Riding on the performances of these star players, their teams tasted success and got the top positions on the points table.

On one hand, these players looked fabulous in their roles; on the other hand, some names disappointed their sides. Discussing more, let’s know 10 eminent players who weren’t upto the mark in the second week.

Here are 10 underperforming players of the second week of the IPL 2024 -

West Indies paceman Alzarri Joseph faced severe criticism after his dismal bowling display against KKR at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. Defending a score of 182 runs for Bengaluru, his responsibility was to be disciplined with the ball but he was hammered mercilessly. In the speedster’s two overs, KKR looted 34 runs at an economy of 17.00.

9. Gerald Coetzee

South Africa pacer Gerald Coetzee couldn’t bolster MI’s bowling attack against Rajasthan. Saving 125 runs, Mumbai’s bowling unit lacked confidence and surrendered in front of Riyan Parag’s spunky innings. Talking about Coetzee’s bowling performance, he conceded 36 runs and got no wickets.

8. Kwena Maphaka

Mumbai Indians (MI) lost their only game in the second week against Rajasthan Royals (RR) at the Wankhede Stadium. After the dismal batting show, MI bowlers got a target of only 125 runs to defend. Kwena Maphaka opened the bowling for Mumbai and dismissed Yashasvi Jaiswal in his first over. He got the prized scalp of the RR opener but couldn’t contain the flow of runs. In his two-over spell, he gave away 23 runs.

7. Reece Topley

Reece Topley played his maiden contest of the 2023 IPL against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. He was inducted into Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s playing XI in Alzarri Joseph’s place. In the crucial game, he got rid of Quinton de Kock but also leaked 39 runs.

Delhi Capitals (DC) opened their account on the points tally with their 20-run victory against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in Visakhapatnam but their premier pacer Anrich Nortje put up a poor bowling show. Against the Yellow Army, he bowled four overs and splurged 43 runs and got no success. In the next game against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), the lanky pacer again looked out of rhythm. This time, he got three wickets but splurged 59 runs.

5. Cameron Green

Australia all-rounder Cameron Green hasn’t produced anything solid from both bat and ball in this tournament, thus far. Against KKR, he played a decent knock of 33 off 21 but in the next game against LSG, he put up poor numbers again. While following a score of 182, the Challengers required his support after losing three wickets within the first powerplay. In the crucial stage of the game, the youngster also capitulated after accumulating only nine runs.

4. Mitchell Marsh

Mitchell Marsh didn’t look in great touch in the second week. Against CSK, his Australian colleague David Warner smashed a half-century while he departed after scoring only 18 off 12. In the next game against KKR, the Capitals were chasing 273 runs and the 32-year-old Aussie fell against his compatriot Mitchell Starc and returned to the dugout with a two-ball duck.

3. Glenn Maxwell

Glenn Maxwell is one of the vital members of Bengaluru and his responsibility is to support the side with both bat and ball. Against Kolkata at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, he showcased his batting mettle with a 28-run innings off just 19 balls. In the enormous game against Lucknow, the Challengers wanted him to step up and rescue the team after the early departure of star openers Virat Kohli and Faf du Plessis while following 182. However, the Aussie failed to hold his nerves in the crunch situation and lost his wicket to Mayank Yadav.

2. Jos Buttler

RR won their third consecutive game in the competition, hammering MI by six wickets in Mumbai but their veteran batter Jos Buttler couldn’t do big. After Jaiswal’s early departure, the 33-year-old lost his wicket to Akash Madhwal after scoring lethargic 13 runs off 16 balls.

1. Faf du Plessis

RCB skipper Faf du Plessis is going through a tough phase in his IPL career. As a skipper, he has won only one game in this competition, so far. Discussing his batting numbers in the second week, the star Proteas batter could pile up only eight runs against KKR. In the 182-run chase against Lucknow, he started his innings confidently with three fours but lost his wicket after scoring 19 while stealing a run in the sixth over.
