IPL 2024: Bargain buys who might play vital roles for their teams

In the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL) auction, the franchises splurged over INR 230 crores to buy 72 players. Mitchell Starc pulled off a record-breaking deal of INR 24.75 crore from Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and topped the list of most expensive players in the history of IPL auctions. Following him, his compatriot Pat Cummins also received an eye-watering contract of INR 20.50 crore from Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). On one hand, these two players got eye-grabbing deals at the business event while on the other, some players got buyers but couldn’t receive massive prices. These bargain players will be important members of their teams as they are expected to handle enormous responsibilities. Here are bargain players who will play huge roles in their teams in IPL 2024: 9. Kartik Tyagi Kartik Tyagi has been active in IPL since 2020 but the youngster has failed to do big yet. After witnessing his ineffective performance in 2023, SRH broke ties with him and he went under the hammer again. This time, Gujarat Titans (GT) invested INR 60 lakh in him for the upcoming competition. With the presence of veteran India speedsters such as Mohammed Shami, Umesh Yadav, and Mohit Sharma, Tyagi might not get a lot of chances in the playing XI consistently but in case, the team management gives him opportunities, he will look to grab them with both hands. 8. Nandre Burger Nandre Burger. (Photo Source: Twitter) South Africa pacer Nandre Burger was picked up for just INR 50 lakh by the 2008 champions Rajasthan Royals (RR) in the auction. The Protea pacer might get the responsibility to support RR’s fast-bowling spearhead Trent Boult to pick up early wickets for the team. The 28-year-old is a new name in international cricket but he has played a lot of domestic cricket for Gauteng and Western Province. He will strive to utilise his experience and skills to showcase his bowling mettle for RR and become an iconic name in the cash-rich league. 7. Mohammad Nabi Mohammed Nabi. (Photo Source: Twitter) Afghanistan veteran all-rounder Mohammad Nabi was sold to Mumbai Indians (MI) for INR 1.5 crore. The 39-year-old might be given a chance to play a few games by the MI team management and he will strive to be at his best in those games to help Mumbai achieve their target of bringing the trophy back home. Nabi has failed to showcase his all-round potential in IPL yet but this time, he will look to make essential contributions to Mumbai with both bat and ball. If given chances in MI’s playing XI, he will have to form a spin duo with Piyush Chawla and also serve the team as a finisher while batting in the lower-middle order. 6. Wanindu Hasaranga Wanindu Hasaranga. (Photo Source: X(Twitter) Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) released Wanindu Hasaranga ahead of the 2023 IPL auction, following which the Sri Lanka leg-break bowler submitted his name for the 2024 auction. SRH didn’t miss the opportunity as they signed up the 26-year-old for a base amount of 1.5 crore. Hasaranga might become the in-charge of SRH’s spin-bowling unit. Along with Mayank Markande, his job will be to contain batters in middle overs. Back in 2022, when he was a part of RCB, he ended up as the second-leading wicket-taker in the season, picking up 26 wickets in 16 matches at an economy of 7.54. 5. David Willey David-Willey. (Photo Source: Twitter) Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) bought England pacer David Willey for only INR 2 crore at the auction. The 33-year-old is a renowned figure in the T20 format of the game as he plays a lot of league cricket. Banking on his experience, the LSG team management might prefer him over Afghanistan pacer Naveen-ul-Haq. The England stalwart might get the task of supporting his national teammate Mark Wood to bolster Lucknow’s pace attack. Along with Wood, Willey’s job will be to provide early breakthroughs to the team. In his IPL career, Willey has served Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and has taken a total of six wickets in 11 matches at an economy of 7.56. In the upcoming season, he will look to deliver impactful numbers to LSG. 4. Mujeeb Ur Rahman Mujeeb ur Rahman. (Photo Source: X/Twitter) Afghanistan off-break bowler Mujeeb Ur Rahman will make a comeback in the cash-rich tournament after three years. KKR reserved the Afghan stalwart’s services for only INR 2 crore at the auction, for the upcoming season. The youngster will be handed the responsibility to support KKR’s spin department with Sunil Narine and Varun Chakravarthy. Along with Chakravarthy, Mujeeb can add variety to KKR’s spin-bowling unit and keep opponents at bay. The 22-year-old has appeared in 19 IPL contests and has taken 19 wickets at an economy of 8.18. 3. Lockie Ferguson Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) have shown faith in the New Zealand paceman Lockie Ferguson to provide strength to their pace attack. The Kiwi pacer was part of KKR in 2023 but failed to be impressive, picking up only one wicket in three matches at an economy of 12.52. Following his dismal performance, KKR parted ways with him and the New Zealand player went under the hammer in the 2024 auction. At the business extravaganza, RCB released only INR 2 crore and got the pacer for his base amount. After back-to-back flop seasons, Ferguson will have to play his part well and save his IPL career. 2. Mustafizur Rahman Mustafizur (Photo Source: Twitter) Bangladesh speedster Mustafizur Rahman will be seen in a CSK jersey as he was sold to the Yellow Army for only INR 2 crore in the 2024 auction after not getting a spot in the Delhi Capitals’ squad for the upcoming season. The Bangla bowler has played 48 games in his eight-year IPL career and has taken 47 wickets at an economy of 7.93. The 28-year-old will provide stability to CSK’s fast-bowling unit with his experience and talent. In 2023, CSK got Sri Lanka’s Matheesha Pathirana, who looked fantabulous with the ball. Captain Dhoni will want Mustafizur to join Pathirana and Tushar Deshpande and form a pace trio that can wreak havoc on batters. 1. Harry Brook Harry Brook Delhi Capitals. At the auction held in Dubai, Brook was fetched for INR 4 crore by Delhi Capitals (DC). After getting the English player at an economical amount, DC Director of Cricket Sourav Ganguly said that his team wasn’t expecting to get the English player at just INR 4 crore. Brook will be an enormous part of the team as he will have to be efficient with his bat in the middle order. Along with illustrious names such as David Warner, Mitchell Marsh, and Rishabh Pant, Brook will have to deliver big numbers to DC with his bat.
