IPL 2024: Country-wise money spent on the players in the auction
The IPL 2024 auction concluded with history being created at the Coca-Cola Arena in Dubai, on December 19, 2023. The INR 20 crore barrier was broken twice on that day.
First Pat Cummins with an INR 20.50 Cr bid by Sunrisers Hyderabad and then Mitchell Starc with KKR’s winning bid of INR 24.75 cr broke records of being the most expensive buys ever in IPL auction history, bettering Sam Curran’s record. Overall, 30 overseas players bagged a combined sum of Rs 151 Crore, over 50% of the total players sold. And out of the overall sum of Rs 230.45 Crore spent at the IPL 2024 Auction, Australians bagged 30% of the sum.
Here is how country-wise money was spent in the IPL 2024 auction:
9. Bangladesh: Rs 2 crore
Bangladesh had the only player sold in the auction, which was Mustafizur Rahman. Rahman was bought by Chennai Super Kings (CSK) during the accelerated round of bidding at the near end of the auction. Earlier, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) had adopted a hardline stance, withdrawing Taskin Ahmed and Shoriful Islam’s names from the auction list and limiting the players’ availability for IPL 2024 as well.
8. Afghanistan: Rs 4 crore
Afghanistan saw three players getting sold in the IPL 2024 auction. The most expensive was Mujeeb Ur Rahman, who was bought for his base price of INR 2 crores by Kolkata Knight Riders, and then Mohammad Nabi for INR 1.5 cr by Mumbai Indians. Their third player sold was Azmatullah Omarzai for INR 50 lakhs to Gujarat Titans.
7. Sri Lanka: Rs 10.9 crore
Sri Lankan players were in demand in the IPL 2024 auction, especially on the bowling side. Wanindu Hasaranga, who had earned more than INR 10 cr from RCB, was bought for INR 1.5 Cr by Sunrisers Hyderabad. Dilshan Madushanka, who impressed one and all in ICC World Cup 2023, got INR 4.6 crore from Mumbai Indians.
The third player from Sri Lanka was Nuwan Thushara, whose action bears resemblance to Lasith Malinga. He was also bought by Mumbai Indians, for INR 4.8 Cr.
6. England: Rs 13.1 crore
England saw six of their players getting successful bids on them during the IPL 2024 auction. The most expensive one was all-rounder Chris Woakes for INR 4.2 Cr, who was bought by Punjab Kings. Harry Brook went to Delhi Capitals for INR 4 cr, while Tom Curran (RCB), David Willey (LSG), and Gus Atkinson (KKR) also went for their respective base prices. Tom Kohler Cadmore was bought by Rajasthan Royals for INR 40 lakhs.
5. South Africa: Rs 14 crore
Four South African players were bought in the IPL 2024 auction. Gerald Coetzee was expected to be one of the huge attractions and he got INR 5 crores from Mumbai Indians. The most expensive, however, was Rilee Russouw, who was bought by Punjab Kings for INR 8 crores. Nandre Burger was bought by RR and Tristan Stubbs went to DC for their base prices.
4. New Zealand: Rs 17.8 crore
Three New Zealand players were sold and earned big money in the IPL 2024 auction. Lockie Ferguson was bought by RCB for his base price late in the auction. However, Chennai Super Kings got their hands on two of the most exciting all-rounders in Rachin Ravindra for INR 1.8 Cr, and Daryl Mitchell earned the big bucks at INR 14 Cr in the auction.
3. West Indies: Rs 21.15 crore
Though only four of the West Indies players got bids in the IPL 2024 auction, two of them got hefty amounts. Shai Hope went to DC and Sherfane Rutherford went to KKR for their respective base prices. But Rovman Powell, who was the first name out for bidding earned INR 7.4 Cr from Rajasthan Royals. But the big bid went for pacer Alzarri Joseph, who was bought by RCB for INR 11.50 Cr.
2. Australia: Rs 68.05 crore
Two of the best Australian pacers, Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc created history in the IPL 2024 auction. Pat Cummins became the first player to get more than INR 20 cr bid, as Sunrisers Hyderabad bought him for INR 20.50 Cr. Then Mitchell Starc became the most expensive buy in IPL history, as KKR broke the bank with an INR 24.75 Cr bid for the left-arm pacer.
Travis Head was bought by SRH for INR 6.80 Cr, while unknown but talented Spencer Johnson went for INR 10 Cr to Gujarat Titans. Jhye Richardson got INR 5 Cr to DC and Ashton Turner was bought by LSG.
1. India: Rs 79.45 crore
The most players sold in the IPL 2024 auction were Indian players. Harshal Patel was the most expensive with a bid of INR 11.75 Cr from Punjab Kings. Sameer Rizvi was the most expensive uncapped player who got INR 8.40 Cr from CSK. Shahrukh Khan (INR 7.4 Cr to GT), Kumar Kushagra (INR 7.20 Cr to DC), and Shivam Mavi (INR 6.4 Cr to LSG) were some of the other expensive buys.
