Star players such as Travis Head, Heinrich Klaasen, Sunil Narine, Phil Salt, Jos Buttler, Rohit Sharma, Ruturaj Gaikwad, and Shivam Dube looked magnificent with their bats and entertained the league’s avid supporters.
Along with these illustrious names, young players such as Ashutosh Sharma and Jake Fraser-McGurk also looked impressive in the week. As IPL 2024 is busy delivering cricketing action in its fifth week, let’s rate all teams’ batting shows in the last week of the tournament
Here are the ratings of all teams’ batting performances in week four -
10. Gujarat Titans (GT)- 3/10
The Gujarat Titans (GT) batting unit disappointed their fans with their dismal batting show against Delhi Capitals (DC) at the iconic Narendra Modi Stadium. Batting first, the Titans were bundled out on 89 runs in 17.3 overs. The hosts’ key batters Shubman Gill, Wriddhiman Saha, Sai Sudharsan, David Miller, and Rahul Tewatia struggled against Delhi’s quality bowling.
9. Lucknow Super Giants (LSG)- 4.5/10
Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) batting attack failed to be impactful in the fourth week of the competition. After three consecutive wins, Lucknow got a six-wicket hammering at the hands of DC at the EKANA Stadium. Batting first, LSG’s main batters Quinton de Kock, Marcus Stoinis, and Nicholas Pooran went back to the pavilion cheaply. Their dismal batting performances concluded the hosts' innings only at a score of 167.
After failing the DC challenge, the Super Giants lost to Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) by eight wickets at the iconic Eden Gardens. This time, their batting failed to counter Mitchell Starc, who looked disciplined with his tight fast bowling.
8. Punjab Kings (PBKS)- 5/10
Punjab Kings (PBKS) struggled to be at their best in the competition’s fourth week. Against Rajasthan Royals (RR) in Mohali, only Ashutosh Sharma looked confident with his bat with his rapid 31-run knock off just 16 balls. Their disastrous batting became the reason for their three-wicket defeat against the Men in Pink. In their next game, PBKS recorded a nine-run loss against Mumbai Indians (MI) and this time, their batting unit again collapsed. Except for Shashank Singh and Ashutosh, all other batters lacked confidence.
7. Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB)- 5.5/10
In the tournament’s fourth week, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) clashed with Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium and faced a 25-run defeat. Chasing an enormous target of 288, Bengaluru replied with 262 runs with the help of Dinesh Karthik’s spunky knock of 83 off just 35.
Before Karthik, openers Faf du Plessis and Virat Kohli kicked off the innings with their swift knock but after their dismissals, Will Jacks, Rajat Patidar, and Saurav Chauhan capitulated under pressure and returned to the dugout with their single-digit scores.
6. Mumbai Indians (MI)- 7/10
MI got an uphill task of chasing 207 runs against their arch-rivals Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the distinguished Wankhede Stadium. Following the humongous target, the Men in Blue fell 20 runs short and lost their fourth match in the competition. Rohit Sharma hit a fine ton but other key batters Hardik Pandya and Suryakumar Yadav, Tim David, and Romario Shepherd failed to hold their nerves while chasing the mammoth total.
5. Delhi Capitals (DC) 7.5/10
DC looked confident in week four after winning their away games against LSG and GT. In both contests, their batting attack performed impressively. Against Lucknow, skipper Rishabh Pant and Jake Fraser-McGurk produced solid knocks and guided the team to victory.
In their next game, they got the simple task of chasing 90 runs, and Delhi opted to go ballistic to chase down the low total briskly and improve the net run rate. Their aggressive approach helped them pull off the target in just 8.5 overs with four wickets in hand.
4. Chennai Super Kings (CSK)- 8/10
CSK exuded confidence against their rivals MI at the Wankhede Stadium. In the crucial game, the Yellow Army lost their openers Ajinkya Rahane and Rachin Ravindra early but captain Ruturaj Gaikwad and Shivam Dube stepped up and helped their side reach a score of 206 with their plucky batting efforts. Gaikwad scored 69 off 40 while Dube ended his knock with an unbeaten 66 off 38. Former skipper MS Dhoni also made a solid cameo with his unbeaten 20-run innings which came in only four balls.
3. Rajasthan Royals (RR)- 8.5/10
RR’s batting found it difficult to chase down a total of 148 with ease against Punjab in Mullanpur. In the crunch moment, Shimron Hetmyer displayed his spunk and took the Royals home with his unbeaten 27 off just 10. After three days, the 2008 champions squared off with Kolkata at Eden Gardens and this time, they lost their six batters at a score of 121 while chasing 224.
Jos Buttler took the matter into his own hands and proved why he is called the man of big games. Along with Rovman Powell, the Englishman stitched a 57-run partnership in just 27 deliveries. After Powell’s departure, the veteran didn’t lose hope and took Kolkata’s bowling attack to the cleaners and snatched victory from the jaws of defeat. Buttler also received the Player of the Match award for his unbeaten 107 off just 60.
2. Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR)- 9/10
KKR’s batting was exceptional in week four of the tournament. In their first game of the week against LSG, they achieved a total of 162 comfortably due to Phil Salt’s unbeaten 89 off 47 and Shreyas Iyer’s run-a-ball 38. After beating Lucknow, they lost to RR unfortunately in a last-ball thriller but their batting again put up a stunning show.
Taking the Sanju Samson-led side to the cleaners, Sunil Narine hit his maiden IPL ton. Angkrish Raghuvanshi and Rinku Singh also looked majestic to help Kolkata post a massive total of 223 runs on the board.
1. Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH)- 9.5/10
SRH scripted history after racking up 287 runs in their 20 overs against RCB at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. Travis Head notched up a 39-ball ton and became the fastest centurion for the Orange Army. Abhishek Sharma also provided support to the side with his superb 34 off 22. Heinrich Klaasen justified his role with his 67 off 31. Aiden Markram and Abdul Samad continued the momentum in the final overs of the innings and returned to the dugout with their brisk knocks.
