IPL 2024: Rating team-wise expensive players' performances after their first games

In the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL) auction held in Dubai on December 19, 2023, franchises spent a huge chunk of money to rope in some quality players. Following the 2023 World Cup in India, franchises such as Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), Chennai Super Kings (CSK), and Punjab Kings (PBKS) broke the bank to pick up marquee players who performed exceptionally at the One-Day International (ODI) event. The 17th IPL edition began with the contest between Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and now, eyes are set on players who bagged lucrative deals at the business event. After four days of cricketing action in the 2024 IPL, all teams have played their opening games and it’s time to discuss the performances of their most expensive players. Here are the ratings of the costliest players from each side - 10. Kumar Kushagra (Delhi Capitals)- Yet to debut Kumar Kushagra. (Source -Twitter/X) Jharkhand wicketkeeper-batter Kumar Kushagra became a part of Delhi Capitals (DC) in the 2024 auction, for a huge amount of INR 7.2 crore. In DC’s first contest against PBKS in Mullanpur, Kushagra’s name was missing from the playing XI as captain Rishabh Pant was seen as a stumper-batter. 9. Rovman Powell (Rajasthan Royals) - Yet to debut Rowman Powell (Source -Twitter/X) Rovman Powell is in the Rajasthan Royals’ camp for this season as the first IPL champions reserved his services for this season after releasing INR 7.4 crore from their purse in the 2024 IPL auction. Against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) at the Sawai Mansingh Indoor Stadium, Rajasthan kicked off their 2024 campaign with a 20-run win. Powell, who is known for his power-hitting potential, didn’t feature in the Pink Army’s playing XI. 8. Shivam Mavi (Lucknow Super Giants) - Yet to debut Shivam Mavi. (Source -Twitter/X) Shivam Mavi was sold to LSG for INR 6.4 crore in the 2024 IPL auction. The pacer was the costliest purchase of Lucknow at the business event and the youngster’s responsibility will be to justify his price amount. He didn’t get picked up for the match against Rajasthan at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium but after Lucknow’s lacklustre bowling performance in Jaipur, he might be given the chance to showcase his skills for his side in the next game against PBKS. 7. Mitchell Starc (Kolkata Knight Riders)- 4/10 Mitchell Starc. (Photo Source: IPL/BCCI) Mitchell Starc hit the headlines in the 2024 auction after getting sold to KKR for INR 24.75 crore. Against SRH, Kolkata were defending a mammoth total of 209 and Starc got the responsibility to open the bowling innings. Bowling a four-over spell, the speedster didn’t get any wickets and gave away 53 runs. Bowling the penultimate over of the game, his duty was to tie the hands of Heinrich Klaasen and Shahbaz Ahmed to keep the Orange Army away from the chase. However, in-form Klaasen whacked him for three sixes and shattered his confidence. In the final delivery of his spell, he bowled a lower full-toss but Shahbaz displayed spunk and smashed him for a maximum, too. 6. Daryl Mitchell (Chennai Super Kings)- 4/10 Daryl Mitchell. (Source -IPL) Impressed with Daryl Mitchell’s stunning batting display for New Zealand in the 2023 World Cup, CSK splurged a massive sum of INR 14 crore on the Kiwi stalwart in the auction. Debuting in CSK’s jersey against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in Chennai, Mitchell came to bat at number four. After the departure of opening batters Ruturaj Gaikwad and Rachin Ravindra, his job was to stand at the crease with Ajinkya Rahane and help the team to go close to the target of 174. However, he failed to hold his nerves and departed after playing a slow knock of 22 off 18. Following the ordinary performance, the 32-year-old will endeavour to be at his best and justify his heavy price tag. 5. Hardik Pandya (Mumbai Indians)- 5/10 Hardik Pandya (Source -IPL) Hardik Pandya returned to MI after three years and got the captaincy mantle. The trade deal with Gujarat Titans (GT) ended with the all-rounder getting signed up for his previous season’s amount of INR 15 crore. Donning Mumbai blues against his former side at the iconic Narendra Modi Stadium, Pandya struggled with both bat and ball. Winning the toss against his counterpart Shubman Gill, he elected to bowl first. Instead of opening with his premier bowler Jasprit Bumrah, he decided to bowl the first over and begin the innings. He bowled three overs and gave away 30 runs without getting any wickets. With the bat, he tasked himself to play the role of a finisher while batting at number seven. In the last over of the game, Mumbai needed 19 runs and he looked extremely confident with boundaries on the initial two balls against Umesh Yadav. After getting whacked for a couple of boundaries, the veteran speedster held his nerves and got rid of the 30-year-old. Pandya’s failure to finish the game cost Mumbai as Gill and Co. succeeded in bringing joy to the faces of their fans with a six-run win. 4. Cameron Green (Royal Challengers Bangalore)- 6/10 Cameron Green. (Source -IPL) Cameron Green was traded to RCB from Mumbai Indians (MI) before the 2024 IPL auction in Dubai. The Aussie became a part of the Challengers at a whopping amount of INR 17.5 crore. In the inaugural contest between CSK and the Challengers in Chennai, he was a part of the latter’s playing XI. Green was sent to bat at number five at a time when Challengers were three down at a score of 42 in 5.3 overs. In the crunch situation, the 24-year-old looked nervous and got cleaned up on Mustafizur Rahman’s stunning delivery in the 12th over of the match. His contribution with the bat was only 18 runs after facing 22 deliveries. With the ball, he gave away 27 runs and picked up the prized scalps of Ajinkya Rahane and Daryl Mitchell in his three-over spell. 3. Harshal Patel (Punjab Kings)- 7/10 Harshal Patel. The pacer was Punjab’s costliest signing at the business extravaganza in Dubai. Donning Punjab’s jersey against DC, the pacer did tight bowling and chipped in with two wickets in his team’s four-wicket win. Bowling four overs, he dismissed David Warner and Rishabh Pant but also leaked 47 runs. In the final over of the first innings, his confidence was shaken as Abhishek Porel took him to the cleaners and succeeded in plundering 25 runs. The PBKS team management will want Harshal to be more disciplined in further games. 2. Pat Cummins (Sunrisers Hyderabad)- 7/10 Pat Cummins. (Source -Twitter/X) Pat Cummins became the second-most expensive player in the cash-rich league, getting signed up for a hefty amount of INR 20.50 crore by SRH in the 2024 auction held in Dubai. The Australia skipper is holding the reins of the Orange Army and is expecting to guide the 2016 champions to another title victory with his leadership prowess. At the iconic Eden Gardens, the Aussie veteran played his maiden game for SRH against KKR but couldn’t make his captaincy debut memorable as Kolkata got a four-run win in the intriguing contest. With the ball, the Sunrisers’ skipper looked decent as he leaked only 32 runs in his four-over spell and got rid of Ramandeep Singh. 1. Spencer Johnson- 8/10 Spenser Johnson. (Source -IPL) Australia pacer Spencer Johnson became the talk of the town after getting a lucrative contract of INR 10 crore from GT in the 2024 IPL auction. Captain Shubman Gill inducted him into GT’s playing XI against MI at the Narendra Modi Stadium. Defending an average total of 168, Gujarat bowlers needed exemplary bowling performances but Johnson looked out of rhythm in his first over and gave away 17 runs. Bowling the penultimate over, he got hit for a maximum by Tilak Varma on the first ball but made a comeback on the next delivery with the southpaw’s scalp. On the final ball of his short spell, he caught and bowled Gerald Coetzee and pushed MI under immense pressure.
