The retentions ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2025) mega auctions saw some shocking names which were left out of the teams. The BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) increased the purse of every team to 120 crore from 100 crore. With the teams potentially opting for a new strategy had to let off some of their priced possession from last year's mini-auction.
The BCCI had provided a new retention option for the franchises. A team could retain up to six players including one uncapped player. Several teams in a bid to retain their star players and allot a substantial salary for their players oversaw some players which fans expected least and some were obvious.

5. Prithvi Shaw
Prithvi Shaw was bought by Delhi Capitals (DC) last year for 8 crore. The DC opener batter was mostly sent to open the innings by DC and had the tough task of accelerating from ball one. He did well in some games using the powerplay and setting the tone before he was overlooked.

The right-handed batter played eight games for Delhi and was less than impressive with the bat in the later stages of the game. He scored 198 runs at an average of 24.75 and an impressive strike rate of 163.64. His highest score was 66 and he smashed 30 boundaries and five maximums.
