Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) has come out to become one of the strongest teams in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Adopting an aggressive batting and strong bowling attack last year, and made it to the finals. Throughout the season, they broke numerous records by posting massive totals. Under the leadership of Pat Cummins, the team has consistently performed, making them one of the most lethal franchises in the tournament.
Their success isn't limited to just the IPL. The Sunrisers brand has expanded globally by investing in teams in South Africa's SA20 and England’s The Hundred. With a brand value of USD 85 million, the Orange Army ranks fifth on the list of the richest IPL teams. In the 2025 mega-auction, they built a strong squad with a mix of experienced players and young talents. The franchise spent a total of 119.80 crore in the auction.
Ownership and Net Worth:
Sunrisers Hyderabad is owned by the Sun TV Network, a media conglomerate based in Chennai. Founded by Kalanithi Maran, Sun TV Network is one of the largest media groups in South India, with ventures in television, newspapers, FM radio, direct-to-home (DTH) services, and film production. His daughter, Kavya Maran, currently holds the CEO position of SRH and is active throughout the games and is heavily involved during the auctions.
SRH was purchased by the Sun TV Network in 2012 for USD 158 million after the Deccan Chargers franchise was terminated. As of 2024, SRH’s estimated net worth has reached INR 735 crore, making it one of the top franchises in the IPL in terms of financial stability. Sun TV Network, which operates 37 satellite television channels across multiple languages, reported a total revenue of INR 4,630.19 crore for the financial year ending March 2024. A significant portion of this revenue comes from their cricket franchises, with SRH alone contributing INR 659.03 crore, making a two-fold increase from INR 276.01 crore in the previous year.
Expansion into Global Cricket:
The Sunrisers brand has expanded itself to international franchise leagues, including Sunrisers Eastern Cape (SEC) in SA20. Their South African T20 team has won back-to-back titles in the SA20 league. Recently, they also acquired the Northern Superchargers franchise in England’s The Hundred for GBP 100 million. This made them the third IPL franchise, after Mumbai Indians and Lucknow Super Giants, to own a team in England’s 100-ball competition. The acquisition also saw them complete a full 100% takeover of the Yorkshire-based franchise.
Revenue Sources of SRH
The financial success of the teams comes from multiple revenue streams. A significant chunk is from the IPL’s central pool, which includes broadcasting rights and sponsorship deals. With the IPL securing multi-billion-dollar broadcasting deals, each franchise receives a share of this massive revenue. Their merchandise and jersey sponsors contribute significantly to their overall earnings.
Notably, the team’s home ground, Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium in Hyderabad, sees strong attendance during IPL matches, and their matchday revenue has grown significantly over the years. Sun TV Network’s success in the media and entertainment industry also adds to its financial strength. With their recent expansion into Hindi, Bangla, and Marathi markets, Sun TV Network’s revenue has seen strong growth.
