IPL: 5 cricketers who might not play next season

While the thrill of IPL 2023 is underway, many fans are in double minds about the future plans of their favorite cricketing stars. Age is the primary reason besides a dip in peak performance, which has led to rumors about key IPL performers bidding adieu to this big stage. While ardent fans would never want their cricketing idols to retire, retirement is inevitable because each player, at the highest level, knows the capability of his/her body and whether it can match the high and optimum standards of fitness set in tournaments like the IPL. Retirement is as unpredictable as a T20 cricket match of the present age. But the retirement of players from leagues like the IPL becomes a little more probable when they have either retired from international cricket a few years ago or are not in the reckoning for the future. Let's look at 5 players who might not play the next edition of the IPL 5. Ambati Rayudu Ambati Rayudu (Photo Source : Twitter) It was Ambati Rayudu’s stellar performance in the IPL which was a major reason for his India team call-up many years ago. He has had a great IPL career although he is going through a rough patch of late, not being able to capitalize on his starts for the Chennai Super Kings. He has scored 4250 runs in 179 innings he has played in the IPL thus far with one hundred and 22 half-centuries. He was close to being a part of the Indian squad for the 2019 Men’s ICC 50-Over World Cup. He has taken Chennai Super Kings over the victory line on several occasions too. Known for his hard-hitting knocks, Ambati Rayudu tweeted about his retirement in the last IPL season before deleting his tweet. This indicates that retirement was surely on his mind but he took back the decision. Considering his recent form, he is probable to retire from IPL after this season ends. 4. Amit Mishra Amit Mishra. (Photo Source: BCCI/IPL) Currently playing for the Lucknow Super Giants in IPL 2023, Amit Mishra has been one of the best leg spinners Indian cricket has seen after the retirement of the great Anil Kumble. He has had a great IPL career too with 169 wickets off 156 matches at a decent economy of 7.35. Amit Mishra has made the art of leg-spin look so easy with his conventional leg spin, googlies, flighted deliveries, and sometimes quick ones to deceive the batsmen. He has mostly played for the Delhi Capitals (previously Delhi Daredevils) in his IPL career. While his longevity in first class cricket demands appreciation, he has already touched the 40 age mark and that is why there are apprehensions that Amit Mishra will call his time after this season’s stint with Lucknow Super Giants as far as his IPL career is concerned. 3. Dinesh Karthik Dinesh Karthik. (Photo Source: BCCI/IPL) Dinesh Karthik made the art of finishing the innings look really beautiful once he was inducted into the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) squad. His prolific batting at the end of innings gained him a spot back in the Indian squad for the T20 World Cup in Australia despite his age factor. Nobody would ever forget his innings in the Nidahas Trophy Final where he clinched victory for India from the jaws of defeat, hitting a six over extra covers, off the last ball. He has played for many IPL sides including Mumbai Indians and Kolkata Knight Riders. He has especially played those hard-hitting knocks for the Delhi franchise where he was sent up the order. He captained the KKR team for a while. As hopes for a comeback to his international career look dim, it is probable he would retire from the IPL after this season. 2. Ishant Sharma Ishant Sharma. He shocked everybody with his in-swinging delivery getting the better of Ricky Ponting and comprehensively dominating him. He was a 19-year-old back then who stunned everybody. While he has 72 wickets off 93 matches he has played in the IPL, this average record does not completely tell the finesse of Ishant Sharma who has also taken a 5/12 in his IPL career. Yes, he has been far better in the longest format where he has played more than 100 Tests. One should not forget that Ishant Sharma was one of the biggest reasons for India’s win in the 2013 Champions Trophy Final, which was a rain-curtailed 20-overs-a-side game. He took important wickets with his well-directed short deliveries and helped India win. But since he has been on the sidelines since the past few years, he might retire from IPL soon. 1. MS Dhoni MS Dhoni. (Photo Source: BCCI/IPL) While the name on top would leave millions of worldwide cricket fans heartbroken, MS Dhoni had indicated last season itself that he would be seen in Yellow either on the field or even off the field sometime soon. He has turned up this season in typical Dhoni style and probably would like to leave on a high. Dhoni is middling the ball so well and finishing the innings with such great skill that it is hard to find a flaw in his batting. Playing and captaining the Chennai Super Kings at the age of 41, he has definitely proved that age is just a number if one has the willpower. Besides excellence in batting and captaining, he is still agile behind the stumps. He recently caught the ball going down the leg side just clipping off the batsman and catching it before taking the DRS (Decision Review System, popularly called as the Dhoni Review System by fans) and getting him out.
