IPL: 5 instances when cricketers were fined due to on-field spat
There have been instances in the IPL arena where players have been involved in a heated exchange and have eventually been fined due to the altercation.
1. Harbhajan Singh-S Sreesanth (KXIP vs MI, 2008)
Kings XI Punjab (Punjab Kings) squared off against Mumbai Indians in the 10th match of the inaugural season of the lucrative T20 tournament. Mumbai won the toss and decided to put Yuvraj Singh & Co. into bat. Kumar Sangakarra brought his A-game into play and smashed 94 runs off 56 deliveries to propel Punjab to 182 runs in 20 overs.
After Sangakarra’s astonishing knock, the Punjab bowlers showed their class and chipped in with wickets at regular intervals. As result, Mumbai could only manage 116 runs in 20 overs. However post the match when the players were exchanging pleasantries, Harbhajan Singh slapped S Sreesanth.
Post the incident, the then-IPL Commissioner Lalit Modi shed some light on the matter and stated, “The match referee went through the video footage and found the incident was totally unprovoked. Just after the match, Harbhajan was shaking hands with all Kings XI players and Sreesanth was third among the players. Instead of shaking hands, Harbhajan slapped him and proceeded."
Harbhajan was fined 100 per cent of his match fee and wasl also banned from the rest of the games of the IPL 2008 season. The then-Mumbai Indians' coach Lalchand Rajput was also docked 50 per cent of his match fee as he was a witness to the incident but did not take any immediate action.
