2. Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) vs Gujarat Lions (GL), IPL 2016
After a blockbuster show in the round-robin stage, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) faced Gujarat Lions (GL) in the Playoffs at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. During the coin toss, luck favoured RCB skipper Virat Kohli and he chose to bowl first. In front of the home crowd, RCB got a fine start as their spinner Iqbal Abdullah removed dangerous Aaron Finch and Brendon McCullum in the second over of the match.
The matter got worse for the Lions as their captain Suresh Raina also fell cheaply to Shane Watson on one. However, with the help of Dwayne Smith’s 73 off 41, GL tasked RCB to chase 159 in 20 overs. Coming out to follow the average total, RCB batters struggled against Dhawal Kulkarni and lost their five scalps on 29 in 5.3 overs.
Except for AB de Villers, all their main batters went back to the pavilion scoring in single digits. In the big game, de Villiers showed the nerves of steel and stitched partnerships with Stuart Binny and Iqbal Abdullah. Riding on the Protea’s unbeaten 79 off 47, Challengers snatched the game from Gujarat by four wickets in 18.2 overs.
