IPL: 5 Instances when teams lost half their side during powerplay
Here are five instances when teams lost half of their batting force during powerplay overs.
1. Mumbai Indians (MI) vs Chennai Super Kings, IPL 2022
In the 15th edition of IPL, both Mumbai Indians (MI) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) locked horns at the Wankhede Stadium. The competition wasn’t going well for both teams as the two most successful IPL sides were already out of the Playoffs race. At the iconic venue, Rohit Sharma won the toss against his counterpart MS Dhoni and elected to bowl first.
Kicking off the innings for MI, Daniel Sams produced fire with the ball and removed Devon Conway and Moeen Ali in the first over. Taking his good work forward, Japsrit Bumrah also trapped Robin Uthappa in the second over. Following these three batters, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Ambati Rayudu also returned to the dugout within the powerplay overs.
With 29/5 in 5.4 overs, CSK were in a perilous situation, and noting this, MI bowlers intensified their assault and folded the visitors on a mere 97 in 16 overs. Pursuing the extremely low total, Mumbai also lost five scalps but a fine batting display from Tilak Verma (34 off 32) helped MI to grab the match comfortably in 14.5 overs.
