4. Highest partnership for the fifth wicket
Kolkata Knight Riders faced Gujarat Lions in the 38th match of IPL 2016. Suresh Raina & co. won the toss and decided to put KKR into bat. GL seamers breathed fire with the new ball and left Kolkata in a spot of bother at 24 for 4. It was looking like one-way traffic but Shakib Al Hasan and Yusuf Pathan had other plans.
The duo knocked the wind off the Gujarat bowling attack and stitched a stunning partnership of 134* runs in just 85 deliveries to stage Kolkata’s comeback. Shakib struck 66 runs off 49 balls and Yusuf hit 63 runs in 41 deliveries. The duo helped KKR post a competitive total of 158 and in the meanwhile created history by stitching the highest fifth-wicket stand in the IPL.
Shakib and Yusuf surpassed the joint-best stand of 130 runs made by Owais Shah-Angelo Mattews (for Kolkata Knight Riders vs Deccan Chargers in 2010) and David Miller-Rajagopal Sathish (for Kings XI Punjab vs Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2013). However, the lion-hearted effort of the ace KKR batters went in vain as GL chased the target down with two overs to spare. Dinesh Karthik (51 runs off 29 balls) was the top scorer for Gujarat.
