IPL Auction: 5 released spinners who could start a bidding war

The upcoming IPL 2025 auction promises to throw in a lot of surprises. Most of the teams have hefty purses as they look to make key additions to their squads. Fans are waiting with bated breath to see how their favourite teams go about assembling their line-ups as the 18th season is only a few months away. The IPL 2025 mega-auction will be held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia on November 24 and 25. Over the years, many spinners have made massive impacts for their teams. Every team yearns to have at least one spinner in their ranks who can give them crucial breakthroughs in the middle overs. However, some spinners like to dry the runs from one end with their wizardry and build pressure on the opposition teams. In the mega-auction, teams will look to rope in some spinners who can bolster their bowling units. Here are five spinners who could start a bidding war at the auction table in Jeddah. The Moga-born was roped in by Punjab Kings ahead of IPL 2019 but he did not get too many chances initially. However, he burst onto the scene during a match against Royal Challengers Bengaluru as he dismissed Virat Kohli, AB de Villiers, and Glenn Maxwell. Brar has played 41 matches in the IPL and bagged 25 wickets at a decent economy rate of 7.91. He knows how to stem the flow of runs and generally gets through his overs quickly. The 29-year-old can also make useful contributions with the bat and teams would love to acquire his all-round services at the auction. 4. Maheesh Theekshana Maheesh Theekshana. (Source -Twitter/X) Maheesh Theekshana is the third-highest wicket-taker among spinners in T20 cricket since November 2021. He joined Chennai Super Kings (CSK) ahead of IPL 2022 and has done a relatively commendable job for the franchise. In 27 matches, he has picked up 25 wickets at an average of 7.66. Theekshana is a highly-skilled bowler who can bowl with the new ball and also at the backend. His recent form has also been quite impressive as he has done well for Sri Lanka in their white-ball fixtures against the West Indies and New Zealand. Theekshana could attract high bids at the auction as several franchises could be interesting to sign him. 3. Wanindu Hasaranga Wanindu Hasaranga. (Photo Source: BCCI/IPL) Wanindu Hasaranga and Rashid Khan are two of the most lethal leg-spinners in white-ball cricket at the moment. However, the Sri Lankan has not been able to translate his international performances into the IPL arena as yet. The 27-year-old was at the center of a bidding war in the previous mega-auction ahead of IPL 2022. He was eventually roped in by Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) for a whopping INR 10.75 crore. Hasaranga finished as the second-highest wicket-taker with 26 scalps from 16 matches in his first season. However, he missed a few matches in his second season due to injuries before being released by the franchise. Sunrisers Hyderabad roped him in ahead of last season for INR 1.50 crore but the 27-year-old had to miss the tournament due to a left heel injury. However, Hasaranga has been churning out some excellent performances for Sri Lanka and in the other leagues and it won't be a surprise to see him getting a substantial payday in the mega-auction. (Photo Source: BCCI/IPL) Washington Sundar's stocks have risen this year, especially after he has returned to the Indian Test setup in more than three years during the home series against New Zealand. The Tamil Nadu cricketer showed that he is not just someone who can bowl a few tight overs with the new ball but can also deceive batters with turn and bounce, especially when the conditions favour the spinners. Having made his IPL debut in 2017, Sundar has not been able to showcase his full potential in the league. From 60 matches, he has bagged 37 wickets at an economy rate of 7.54. His all-round skills have not been used as much as it should have been. However, the 25-year-old can expect a bidding war as his improved skillsets and rich vein of form could augur well for any team. 1. Yuzvendra Chahal Yuzvendra Chahal. (Photo Source: Twitter) Rajasthan Royals retained their full quota of six players ahead of the auction but could not find a place for Yuzvendra Chahal, the highest wicket-taker in IPL history. Chahal has bagged 205 wickets from 160 games in the IPL at an average of 22.45 and an economy rate of 7.84. He won the Purple Cap in IPL 2022 after bagging 27 wickets from 17 matches. Chahal might have lost his place in India's T20I side to young Ravi Bishnoi, but he is still one of the most reliable spinners in the shortest format of the game. Last year, he took 18 wickets from 15 games. However, his economy rate (9.41) was his worst in a particular season of the IPL. This, however, should not be too much of a hindrance in his way as teams know that Chahal is a lion-hearted cricketer who has the knack of overcoming setbacks. Fans can expect the 34-year-old to go for a high price at the auction.
