With his unorthodox action and menacing pace, Jasprit Bumrah has achieved immense success in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Moreover, he has succeeded in emerging as a dangerous name among batters in international cricket and the Indian domestic league. Following Bumrah’s decent bowling display in the 2012-13 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, Mumbai Indians (MI) picked him for the 2013 IPL edition.

In his maiden season, he got two games for the franchise but couldn’t cement his place in the team, taking only three wickets in two matches. Next year, the Mumbai-based franchise included him in the playing XI for 11 games but this time too, he failed to create an impact with his bowling. He ended the season with only five wickets in the season at an expensive economy of 7.58. 

Furthermore, his struggle continued in 2015 too, whereby for the majority of the tournament, he was seen warming the benches. Recognising his exceptional work for Gujarat in the domestic circuit, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) gave him a chance to tour with the national team in Australia for ODI and T20I series. Grabbing the opportunity with both his hands, Bumrah did excellent for India in both the white-ball series. His performance in Australia series cemented his spot in the national squad and he became part of India’s campaign for the 2016 Asia Cup and the T20 World Cup held in India.

Heartened by his success in the international circuit, Bumrah showcased his bowling skills in the 2016 IPL. With 15 wickets in 14 matches at an economy of 7.80, he came out as the second-leading wicket-taker for the team, following Mitchell McClenaghan with 17 scalps in 14 contests at an economy of 8.17.

However, his best came in 2017, when he ended up becoming the leading wicket-taker for MI, clinching 20 wickets in 16 matches at an economy of 7.39. In an intriguing group match against Gujarat Lions (GL), he looked amazing with the ball, defending 12 runs in the Super Over with his sensational bowling.

With blockbuster performances in two consecutive editions of the tournament, Jasprit Bumrah became an integral part of the team. Among bowling maestros Lasith Malinga and Harbhajan Singh, his presence became crucial to pocket games. In 2018, MI’s journey concluded in the league stage but the speedster again hit the headlines for his disciplined bowling. Claiming 17 wickets in 14 matches at an economy of 6.88, he made it to the list of top wicket-takers in the tournament yet again.

MI went into the tournament as the favourites for yet another occasion in 2019. Under their flamboyant captain Rohit Sharma, they were looking to clinch the distinguished trophy for the record fourth time. Hunting 19 batters in 16 contests at an economy of 6.63, the veteran became the highest wicket-taker again in their record fourth title victory.

The Ahmedabad-born pacer continued his form in the 2020 edition as he formed a remarkable bowling pair with the New Zealand quick, Trent Boult. Partnering with him, he looked stunning and scalped 52 heads with him for the team. The dashing bowler wrapped up the tournament with 27 wickets in 15 matches at an economy of 6.73.

The MI stalwart delivered a lot of match-winning bowling displays to his franchise but his special came in a massive Playoff game against the Shreyas Iyer-led Delhi Capitals (DC). Notching up 4/14 figures with the ball, he helped Mumbai to register a comprehensive victory of 57 runs. For his extraordinary performance, he also received the Player of the Match award. The veteran utilised his experience in the final game too against the Capitals. This time, he went wicketless but delivered an economical spell, splurging only 28 runs in his four overs.

After the magnificent performance in the 2020 edition, MI haven’t been up to the mark and ended their journey in 2021 and 2022 without Playoff appearances, but during this period too, Bumrah showcased his bowling prowess by fetching 36 wickets in 28 games. Currently, MI are the most successful team after the 15 editions of the cash-rich IPL. The 29-year-old’s services to the franchise have played an essential part in Mumbai’s incredible success in the tournament. The marvellous bowler has racked up 145 wickets in 120 contests at an economy of 7.39 in his vast IPL career. Along with these impressive numbers, the MI quick also had some spectacular feats in the illustrious T20 league.
