3. Joe Root
In England’s 2019 World Cup victory, Joe Root played a vital part with his bat, racking up 556 runs in 11 games. This time, England relied on the veteran again to reinforce their top order but he has failed to play his part efficiently. In this World Cup, Root has scored only 175 runs in six matches at an average of 29.16.
Against the Proteas, Root’s responsibility was to stand at the crease and play fierce cricket to help his team take close to the vast total but the right-handed batter also could not hold his nerves under pressure and joined Bairstow at the pavilion after contributing only two runs to his team.
Coming out in the middle after Bairstow’s dismissal, Root got trapped on Marco Jansen’s delivery at the short fine leg. In the upcoming matches, the star player will have to step up with his bat so that England could give some tough time to the quality sides such as Australia and Pakistan.
