Bangladesh are looking to create an impact in this tournament under Shakib Al Hasan but currently, they are on the backfoot with just one win and two losses in three outings. In the first week of the competition, they registered a six-wicket win over Afghanistan in Dharamshala and started their campaign positively.

Despite winning the game against the Afghan team, their batting emerged as a concern. Following a low total of 157, the Bangla side lost four wickets. Their openers Tanzid Hasan and Liton Das got dismissed cheaply scoring 5 (13) and 13 (28) respectively. Mehidy Hasan Miraz’s 57 (73) and Najmul Hossain Shanto’s unbeaten 59 (83) guided Bangladesh to the victory.

Bangladesh’s next challenge was against England at the same venue. This time, Shakib and his men got hammered by 137 runs. Pursuing the massive target of 365, the Bangla batters never looked comfortable but Liton and veteran Mushfiqur Rahim batted decently and scored 76 (66) and 51 (64) respectively but all other players were out of rhythm.

7. Afghanistan - 5/10

Afghanistan are expected to be effective in this tournament against big teams but in the first week, they weren’t been to the mark. The Afghan side kicked off their campaign with a six-wicket loss against Bangladesh in Dharamshala. In their first World Cup 2023 game, the Aghan team got bundled out on a mere 156.

Only wicketkeeper batter Rahmanullah Gurbaz looked confident with his bat, scoring 47 off 62. All other batters didn’t stand at the crease for a long time which led to the Afghan team’s debacle. Following the defeat against Bangladesh, the Afghanistan team flew to Delhi to take on India at the Arun Jaitley Stadium.

Against the hosts, the Afghan team got an eight-wicket defeat but their batters exuded confidence in the match and racked up 272 runs on the board in their 50 overs. Taking advantage of the batting track, the Afghan skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi and Azmatullah Omarzai scored 80 (88) and 62 (69) respectively.

Afghanistan however have come up with a massive upset in the World Cup when they defeated England in their third match of the tournament. Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ikram Alikhil combined to take Afghanistan to a decent total before the bowlers helped bring the match home.
