ODI World Cup 2023: Top Records Broken in First Week
Some players and teams hit the headlines for shattering some old World Cup records and hitting new heights.
1. Highest team total in the World Cup
Against Sri Lanka, de Kock, van der Dussen, and Markram contributed centuries to South Africa which helped them to post 428 runs on the board in their end of 50 overs. These runs made them the team with the highest total in an innings of the World Cup. This was the eighth occasion when the Proteas crossed the 400-run mark in ODI cricket.
During their innings, Temba Bavuma and his boys also scored 45 fours which is the most by any team in a World Cup game. Following the blockbuster batting show from South Africa, it was witnessed how the massive score put pressure on Sri Lanka as the island nation capitulated on 326 in 44.5 overs.
In the World Cup, it was the third time the Proteas crossed the 400-run mark. Back in the 2015 World Cup, South Africa scored 408 and 411 against the West Indies and Ireland, respectively. After starting the 2023 World Cup confidently, Bavuma and Co.'s endeavours will be to continue their aggressive approach in further matches and qualify for the knockouts.
