The game between South Africa and Sri Lanka which was played in Delhi, also recorded the highest aggregate in the ODI World Cup history. Winning the toss, Sri Lanka skipper Dasun Shanaka won the toss and invited the Proteas to bat first. Riding on the exceptional knocks from de Kock, van der Dussen, and Markram, South Africa posted 428/5 on the board.

Sri Lanka failed to chase the total but scored 326 runs in 44.5 overs. Charith Asalanka, who scored 79 off 65, became the leading run-getter from Sri Lanka. After the early departure of Pathum Nissanka on nought, Mendis also took South Africa’s bowling attack to the cleaners.

The wicketkeeper batter notched up 76 off 42 and he decorated his rapid innings with 12 boundaries (eight maximums and four fours). Shanaka also contributed 68 runs off 62 deliveries with six fours and three sixes to curtail the margin of defeat. Combining the scores of both sides, 754 runs were made which is the highest aggregate in a World Cup game.
