Punjab Kings (PBKS) are yet to win their maiden trophy in the Indian Premier League (IPL) but in these 16 years, they have delivered some scintillating batting performances to their supporters. In 2008, when the inaugural edition of the cash-rich tournament was played, Australia’s Shaun Marsh became the Orange Cap winner for scoring 616 runs in 11 matches and ending up as the leading run-scorer in the competition. Punjab’s batting looks solid for the 2024 IPL edition as they have renowned names such as Shikhar Dhawan, Jonny Bairstow, Liam Livingstone, and Jitesh Sharma, who are known for taking quality bowling attacks to the cleaners. Winning the toss, Royals’ stand-in skipper Shane Watson elected to field first, and Marsh along with his compatriot James Hopes made the visiting side regret their decision. Along with his national teammate, Marsh stitched a 133-run partnership in just 13.4 overs. Hopes departed after scoring his half-century, but that did not hinder Marsh to continue his onslaught against Rajasthan bowlers and smashed his maiden IPL ton. The stylish left-handed batter went back to the pavilion on 115 after facing 69 deliveries. Riding on his knock, Punjab posted a humongous total of 221 runs on the board and achieved a comprehensive 41-run win. Against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in Mohali, he scored his maiden and only IPL ton and received appreciation from former legends of the game. Bowling after winning the toss, Punjab restricted CSK to 188 in 20 overs. Following the huge target, PBKS lost their captain Adam Gilchrist early but Valthaty was too hot to handle for CSK bowlers. The right-handed batter held one end and took his team home with his unbeaten 120 off 63. Valthaty also received the Player of the Match award in his team’s six-wicket win. 3. Before the match, MS Dhoni won the toss and invited Punjab to bat first. Dhoni’s decision went against his team, as PBKS openers Sehwag and Manan Vohra looked relentless against bowlers from the first over of the contest. Vohra departed after scoring 34 off 31, but Sehwag was merciless towards CSK’s bowling unit and helped his side post 226 runs on the board.
