During the recent IPL 2024 mega auction in Jeddah, Indian wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant became the most expensive player ever sold in the history of the league. The 27-year-old was acquired by Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) for a whooping INR 27 crore, breaking the previous record set just minutes earlier by Shreyas Iyer's INR 26.75 crore deal with Punjab Kings.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and LSG initiated the bidding, with Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) joining the fray as RCB dropped out. The bidding war increased as the price quickly escalated, with SRH and LSG pushing the prize tag higher. The bid touched INR 20.75 crore, at which point SRH withdrew, leaving LSG as the frontrunner.

Pant's former team Delhi Capitals (DC) exercised their right-to-match (RTM) option at the prize. This allowed LSG to raise their bid further, which they did, pushing the price to the record-breaking INR 27 crore. DC chose not to match this final bid, resulting in Rishabh Pant's move to LSG. The acquisition is crucial for LSG, who were in search of a new captain.

Rishabh Pant's IPL career began with Delhi Daredevils in 2016 for a decent salary of INR 1.90 crore which continued in the next season. Post that Pant saw a salary escalation over the years. His consistent performance saw his wages climb up to INR 8 crore from 2018 to 2021 with Delhi Capitals.

The year 2022 was a significant milestone with his salary doubling up to INR 16 crore which followed him in the 2024 season with the Capitals. In the 2025 mega-auction, the southpaw who put his name in the auction set his base price at INR 2 crore and saw teams splurging money for him. Eventually, Lucknow Super Giants acquired his services at a big prize of INR 27 crore, making him the most valuable player in the IPL.
