The T20 World Cup 2022 is already underway in Australia and its fever shows no signs of decline as the Super 12 stage starts from October 22. The first few matches of the First Round of T20 World Cup have given us a glimpse of how the tournament is going to unfold.
With Namibia defeating Asia Cup 2022 champions in the tournament opener, and Scotland beating two-time World Champions, the West Indies, things are going to be exciting in Australia.
Some big teams have all their bases covered while the others are struggling in one department or two. India are struggling with their death bowling whereas Pakistan's middle order is yet to crack the code of consistency. South Africa are yet to fire as a unit together whereas Australia and England enjoy a balanced squad going into the World Cup.
The home team has never won the T20 World Cup. However, things could change this time and the pattern might finally break. The defending champions, Australia, are once again one of the favourites to win the tournament and here's why they might successfully defend the T20 World Cup:
1. Home advantage
Playing at home gives some sense of familiarity to the teams and it acts as a major advantage, especially in multi-nation tournaments. When the entire stadium is cheering for the home team, the opponent ought to get an uneasy sense. A familiar environment has been the key to winning an ICC trophy, especially since the last decade.
The last time Australia hosted a World Cup was the ODI World Cup in 2015. Australia were the favourites to win that tournament and that's what exactly happened. They did not just win the World Cup, they dominated their way to the silverware and will look to dominate the T20 World Cup in a similar fashion.
Having won the T20 World Cup in 2021, Australia will be confident to retain the title of World Champions. Aaron Finch's captaincy has been spot on especially since the start of the T20 World Cup in 2021. The home advantage is just the cherry on top for the Aussies.
