The emergence of T20 cricket gave rise to a new phenomenon - the need to have a designated finisher in the playing XI. What Kapil Dev, Michael Bevan and Lance Klusener did back in the day is now branded as a designated spot and all the countries have now groomed a specialist to accelerate and finish the game in the death overs.

Assigning specific roles to players was not the case in the past but studies show the importance of it in modern-day cricket. Almost all teams hire an analyst these days to study the importance of a particular role and especially to understand the impact of those players at respective position. A designated finisher is the need of the hour and the upcoming T20 World Cup will have plenty on show for us. So, without further ado, let’s jump straight into it-

Rating designated finishers of all the eight qualified teams of Super 12

Australia - 9/10

Matthew Wade and young Tim David will be in charge of finishing games for the Australian team during the T20 World Cup. Marcus Stoinis, is another player who can be called a finisher but his numbers in 2022 are substandard, to say the least. Even though, Stoinis will not be dropped from the squad his all-round skills will come in handy in the global tournament.

Coming back to the designated finishers, the 25-year-old Tim David has played just three T20 internationals for Australia. He wreaked havoc with the bat in his last T20I and scored a half-century at a jaw-dropping strike rate of 200. His numbers for Singapore have also been spectacular. With a career strike rate of almost 160, he can be the 'X' factor down the order that Australia need in order to win to defend their title.

On the other hand, Wade has played some of his best cricket in the past year. In the year 2022, Wade has been launching an onslaught at an average of 94 and at a strike rate of 164.91 in T20I cricket. It puts him straight into the list of top-three finishers of the game at the moment.

He played a match-winning knock in the semi-finals of the 2021 T20 World Cup against Pakistan and it proved that the 34-year-old can keep his calm in pressure situations. To conclude, Australia are in safe hands as far as finishing games during the T20 World Cup is concerned.
