8. Charith Asalanka (Sri Lanka)
Sri Lanka’s endeavours will be to play quality cricket in the 2023 World Cup. The 1996 champions are surely not the favourites to win the title but the team has the potential to upset the heavyweights on the sub-continent conditions. Sri Lanka will heavily rely on batters to deliver a solid show to their supporters in the World Cup.
In the top order, experienced Kusal Perera and Kusal Mendis will be supporting the team along with the youngster Pathum Nissanka while in the middle order, Charith Asalanka will have to turn up against bowlers. Asalanka has played 41 one-day matches in his international career and has scored 1272 runs in 36 innings at a strike rate of 89.26.
Asalanka’s performance has been decent this year as he has scored 520 runs in 18 innings of 22 ODIs at a strike rate of 87.24. In the recently concluded Asia Cup, the 26-year-old showcased his match-finishing skills with his unbeaten 49-run innings off 47 deliveries against Pakistan at the R. Premadasa Stadium.
