In the fifth match of the ODI World Cup 2023, when India were tasked to chase 200 by Australia at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Indian cricket team supporters were expecting their side to pull off the target easily but the matter worsened when their key batters Ishan Kishan, Rohit Sharma, and Shreyas Iyer went back to the pavilion without scoring any runs.
At the score of two, India lost three batters, and from there, the responsibility was on Virat Kohli and KL Rahul to help India rescue from the crisis. Both batters played their part exceptionally and took the team close to victory. Kohli went back to the pavilion after notching up 85 off 116 and Rahul stood at the crease until the end and took the team home with his unbeaten 97 off 115.
With his 85-run match-winning knock, Kohli again justified his title of ‘master of run chases.’ Kohli’s heroic knock against the Men in Yellow has put him in a special place on the list of the best batters in run-chases. Talking more about Kohli’s spot, let’s know about the top 10 One-Day International (ODI) batters who hold the best numbers while chasing.
Here are the top 10 ODI batters with the best chasing records
10. Sourav Ganguly
Former India skipper Sourav Ganguly is known for uplifting the standard of Indian cricket in the 2000s, with captaincy and batting. As a batter, he is the third-most successful player with 11221 runs in 297 innings of 308 matches. Ganguly’s record is impeccable as a run-chaser as well.
The former India captain scored 3289 runs in 73 innings of 75 matches while following the target. In the 2002 Natwest Series final at Lord’s, Mohammad Kaif and Yuvraj Singh received the credit for helping India chase down a total of 326 but it was Ganguly who launched the assault against England.
While opening with Virender Sehwag, the southpaw hit 60 runs off 43 deliveries and gave a confident start to the team. Whenever the famous series victory is remembered, Ganguly’s name pops up in the minds of cricket fans for the epic shirtless celebration but his solid 60-run knock is something that should be recalled more.
