Although Bangladesh made their ODI debut in 1986, it was only in 2000, that Bangladesh became a full member of the ICC. In the same year, they featured in their debut Test against India. However, things were not easy in the initial years, with the team trying to understand their combinations and adapting to different surfaces in red-ball cricket.

In the first decade of this century, some players fought hard in their every appearance against top teams to help the Tigers prevail on most occasions. Out of them, three prominent cricketers certainly left their mark on international cricket but are not given enough credit in today’s times.

1. Habibul Bashar

Bashar made his ODI debut against Sri Lanka in April 1995. His red-ball debut came along with Bangladesh in November 2000, wherein he impressed with a knock of 71 against a quality Indian attack. He scored his first Test century in the longest format came against Zimbabwe, a year later.

With consistent fifties against Australia and South Africa, the talented batter was made the captain of the team in both formats. Under his leadership, Bangladesh secured their first-ever Test win against Zimbabwe, while contributing a total of 149 runs as well. Furthermore, he led the team to a famous win over India in the ODI World Cup 2007.

He decided to retire in 2008 in favour of the Indian Cricket League, which finished his international career. The 50-year-old played 161 matches and amassed 5,194 runs across two formats. Bashar is currently the national selector but is still not among the news headlines.
