2. Star Sports’ “Mauka Mauka” Series (2015)
The first-ever "Mauka Mauka" ad was released by Star Sports in 2015 to promote the ODI World Cup which was co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand that year, and it captured the attention of cricket enthusiasts instantly. The ad was initially planned to be a one-off thing. However, the massive response for the first video made the channel air a series of adverts for each of India's matches at the marquee event.
The first ad began in March 1992 with a young Pakistani cricket fan in Karachi saving up firecrackers which he can burst when Pakistan is about to beat India at the World Cup. He gets disappointed when his team loses the encounter and has to cancel his plans of lighting the firecrackers. The video shows him growing older over the years but his team fails to beat India in any of the subsequent World Cups. The video ends at the conclusion of the 2011 World Cup semi-final with the supporter asking his son, "Kab phodenge yaar?" (When will we burst the crackers, buddy?). New versions of the "Mauka Mauka" ad have been released ahead of subsequent World Cup India-Pakistan matches.
