The rise in the standard of their game is there for everyone to see and a bulk of the credit for the same can go to their batting approach and the kind of batters they have produced over the years. In the last two decades, their batters have played some marvellous knocks that are memorable for their fans and world cricket too. In some of their glorious ODI wins over the years, their batters have played a prime role. Let's take a trip down memory lane and revisit some of the top batting displays by Bangladesh batters in ODIs: 5. Mushfiqur Rahim’s 46* vs India, Asia Cup 2012 In the 2012 Asia Cup, Bangladesh showed signs of improvement in ODIs by playing some good cricket against all three Asian giants - India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. In the fourth game of that tournament, Mushfiqur Rahim played a special innings against the Men in Blue. Chasing 290 to win, Bangladesh put up a few solid partnerships - 113-run stand between Tamim Iqbal and Jahurul Islam and a 68-run stand between Nasir Hossain and Shakib Al Hasan. But after Shakib perished in the 42nd over it seemed that the match might slip away from Bangladesh's grasp. But in came skipper Mushfiqur Rahim and with the arrival of Rahim at the crease, the Bangla fans expected him to take the team home and he did the same. With 65 required off 49 deliveries, Rahim had to take risks and he did the same by going ballistic against the Indian bowlers. With his rapid innings of 46* off 25 balls, Bangladesh wrapped up the match in their favour with five wickets to spare. 4. Tamim Iqbal’s 51 vs India, 2007 ODI World Cup Bangladesh’s victory over India in the 2007 World Cup is still special for every Bangladesh cricket supporter. The team’s win over the star-studded Indian team in the competition made a great impact on the Bangla tigers as the match gave them a star batter in Tamim Iqbal. Tamim is still considered one of the heroes of the game for his half-century. Pursuing a target of 192, the Southpaw provided a great start to the team with his fierce batting. In his innings of 51 runs, Iqbal smashed nine boundaries (seven fours and two sixes). His aggressive performance set the momentum for the team as other batters too felt confident to bat fearlessly in the game. With that historic win, Bangladesh saw the rise of Tamim who didn't look behind from there on. 3. Mahumudullah 103 vs England, 2015 World Cup After upsetting England in the 2011 World Cup, Bangladesh were facing England again for the third time in World Cups (ODIs). At the Adelaide Oval, everyone was expecting Eoin Morgan's side to crush Mashrafe Mortaza and his boys easily but the then-29-year-old Mahmudullah showed spunk from the Bangladesh side. In the important game, the right-handed batter performed brilliantly by smashing a century. By virtue of his his 103-run knock off 138 balls, the Bangla Tigers gave a target of 276 to England. His innings also emboldened the Bangladesh bowlers as they wrapped up England for 260 runs and the Bangla Tigers qualified for the knockout round of any ICC event for the first time. 2. Shakib Al Hasan’s 124 against West Indies, 2019 World Cup In the 23rd game of the 2019 World Cup, Bangladesh and the West Indies faced each other. After winning the toss, Bangladesh skipper Mashrafe Mortaza invited the opposition team to bat first and the West Indies batters showed a ruthless attitude towards the Bangla bowlers and racked up 321 runs on the board. Chasing the gigantic score of 322, the Bangladesh openers provided a solid start to the team but it was Shakib Al Hasan who launched a full-fledged attack on the Caribbean bowlers. Throughout the innings, the veteran played attacking cricket which helped him score a ton and also take the team home. Riding on his blitzkrieg, Bangladesh also created history by defeating the West Indies for the first time in 50-overs World Cup. 1. Mohammad Ashraful’s 100 vs Australia, 2005 NatWest Series In the 2005 NatWest Series, Bangladesh were locking horns with Australia at Cardiff in the second match. Batting first, Australia put up 249 on the board with Damien Martyn’s 77-run knock and Michael Clarke’s 54. Chasing the target of 250, the Bangladesh top order collapsed but Mohammad Ashraful with Habibul Bashar stabilised the innings. Ashraful, with his skipper Bashar, maintained a partnership that helped Bangladesh to make a comeback in the game. With his 101 ball innings, the team pulled off the chase in the last over of the game. The brilliant batting display by the former Bangladesh skipper still resides in the heart of every fan of the team as in those days beating the Aussies under Ricky Ponting was one of the most difficult tasks.
