4. Sri Lanka vs Kenya in 2003
The former world champions Sri Lanka had never tasted a defeat from associate teams in their history of the World Cups before 2003. In the 2003 World Cup, Kenya handed them a 53-run loss in the group stage and shocked the world along with Sri Lankan cricket supporters. Under Steve Tikolo, the Kenya cricket team pulled off this difficult task in Nairobi.
Sanath Jayasuriya, who was the then Sri Lanka skipper, won the toss and invited Kenya to bat first. The hosts lost their opener Ravi Shah on the second delivery of the match but Kennedy Otieno looked in excellent touch. The right-handed batter racked up 60 off 88 and helped his side put up 210 runs on the board. Supporting Otieno, Hitesh Modi and Maurice Odumbe also contributed 26 runs apiece.
However, it was the tailender Peter Ongondo, who won the hearts with his spunky 20-run innings off just 18 balls. Defending the low total valiantly, Kenya bundled out Sri Lanka at the score of 157 in 45 overs. Collins Obuya trapped five Sri Lanka batters with his fiery leg-break bowling. Steve Tikolo also dismissed two batters and assisted Obuya. In the end, Obuya received the Player of the Match award for guiding his team to a 53-run win, with 5/24 figures in his 10-over spell.
