Ireland made their World Cup debut memorable in 2007 with their incredible three-wicket win over Pakistan in the group stage. Playing the important match against the Men in Green at Sabina Park, in Jamaica, the Irish captain Trent Johnston won the toss and opted to field first.

The Irish bowlers picked up Mohammad Hafeez and Younis Khan early and had a complete command over the game. Pakistan failed to recover from the horrendous start as their batting completely collapsed under pressure. The Men in Green got wrapped up at a score of 132 in 45.4 overs.

For Ireland, it was a golden opportunity to beat a quality side and hit the headlines. Pursuing the total, the Irish team lost the opener, Jeremy Bray and Eoin Morgan early but it was Niall O’Brien, who played a responsible innings of 72 off 107 to take his team closer to the target. Niall’s younger brother Kevin scored an unbeaten 16 and took the team home along with his captain Johnston, who also chipped in with an unbeaten knock of nine runs. As a result, Niall became the Player of the Match for his fine knock in his side’s three-wicket victory.
