Women's T20 World Cup 2023: Flop XI

The ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2023 was brought to a close on February 26 as Australia trumped the hosts South Africa in the summit clash to be crowned T20 world champions for the third time in a row. The T20 extravaganza witnessed many players take the tournament by storm with their jaw-dropping performances. However, there were also some top-drawer cricketers who failed to rise to the occasion at the grandest stage of them all and were quite dismal with their performances. Let us compile a playing XI of players who failed to live up to their billing at the marquee event. Here is the Flop XI of the tournament 1. Shafali Verma Shafali Verma has been a consistent performer in the international arena. Shafali has featured in 56 T20Is and scored 1333 runs at a strike rate of 132.11. When it comes to the 50-over format, the opening batter has scored 531 runs in 21 matches at a strike rate of 83.62. Shafali is known for her fearless brand of cricket and is entrusted to provide the Women in Blue with brisk starts. However, the 19-year-old did not play the role to perfection at the T20 World Cup 2023 and had a pretty mediocre outing at the tournament. Shafali featured in five matches and could score just 102 runs at a strike rate of 108.51. Her failure to start the innings on a high put pressure on the middle order and due to the same, India were not able to put up formidable scores on the board. 2. Sophia Dunkley Sophia Dunkley has taken the international circuit by storm with her blistering performances. She has put up an exhibition of her flamboyant stroke play and provided England with crackling starts. The ace batter has featured in 44 T20Is and scored 652 runs at a strike rate of 117.68. Dunkley was in a rich vein of form leading into the T20 World Cup 2023 and smashed blistering half-centuries in the warm-up matches against South Africa and New Zealand. Thus, it was expected that the ace batter would set the tournament ablaze with her performances. However, Dunkley failed to continue with her form and did not fare well in the T20 extravaganza. She could manage only 78 runs in five matches at a strike rate of 141.81. The team management would have expected more from their opening batter. 3. Alice Capsey Alice Capsey is a ferocious striker of the cricket ball and has knocked the wind out of bowling attacks that have come her way. The 18-year-old has made 15 appearances for the national side in the shortest format and smashed 307 runs at a strike rate of 132.90. Capsey has been a game-changer for England with the bat. However, she was not consistent with her performances in the recently culminated marquee tournament. Apart from her blistering half-century in the match against Ireland, she failed to have any substantial score under her name. Capsey could only score a total of 73 runs in the five games she played in the T20 extravaganza. In the high-voltage semi-final clash against South Africa, the youngster failed to trouble the scorers and was dismissed on the second delivery. 4. Sophie Devine Sophie Devine has been the mainstay of the New Zealand batting line-up for over a decade. She has dismantled bowling attacks for fun and amassed truckloads of runs across formats. Besides her batting might, the 33-year-old has been a strike force with the ball. Devine has accumulated 2969 runs in 119 T20Is at a strike rate of 121.23 and picked up 110 wickets at an economy of 6.34. In the ODIs, the ace all-rounder has accumulated 3330 runs in 134 matches at an average of 30.27 and taken 89 scalps at an economy of 4.45. However, the veteran cricketer did have much impact in the T20 World Cup 2023. Devine featured in four games and could manage just 19 runs at a strike rate of 61.29. She is a vital cog in the New Zealand side and her poor form was one of the reasons for the early exit of the White Ferns from the marquee tournament. 5. Sune Luus Sune Luus has been an integral part of the South African side for over a decade. She has scored 1799 runs in 106 ODIs at an average of 24.31 and bagged 115 wickets at an economy of 4.47. Coming to the shortest format, the batting all-rounder has scored 1077 runs in 102 matches and picked up 49 scalps at an economy of 6.54. Luus was the team’s commander-in-chief in the recently culminated T20 extravaganza. The ace batter fared well as a leader and shepherded South Africa to their first-ever T20 World Cup final. However, she failed to perform as per expectations on the batting front and could not provide valuable contributions for her side. Luus got a couple of starts but was not able to convert them into a big score. Also, the rate at which the right-handed batter scored came under the scanner. She featured in six games in the high-profile competition and could score only 75 runs at a strike rate of 97.40. 6. Amy Hunter Amy Hunter is an up and coming talent in Ireland’s cricketing circles. She has featured in 11 ODIs and scored 294 runs at a strike rate of 89.90. Talking about the shortest format, the 17-year-old has scored 239 runs in 17 matches at a strike rate of 91.22. Hunter was in good touch leading into the T20 World Cup 2023. In the warm-up game against Australia, she took the attack to the opposition right from the get-go and smashed 26 runs off 14 balls. Therefore, it was anticipated that she would carry on the good work to the big stage. However, it was not meant to be as Hunter had a horror show with the bat at the T20 carnival in South Africa. The wicketkeeper-batter featured in four games in the competition and could score mere 23 runs at a strike rate of 85.18. 7. Chloe Tryon Chloe Tryon is a proven performer for South Africa across formats. She has scored 1652 runs in 97 ODIs at a strike rate of 100.00 and bagged 43 wickets at an economy of 4.23. Talking about the T20 format, she has piled on 1036 runs in 88 matches at a strike rate of 137.21 and taken 27 scalps at an economy of 7.02. Tryon has been a match-winner for South Africa with both bat and ball and her performance was key to South Africa’s chances in the T20 World Cup 2023. However, the ace all-rounder did not perform as per her standards and had a quite mediocre campaign in the marquee event, mainly with the bat. Barring her match-winning performance in the seventh match of the tournament against New Zealand which saw her score 40 runs off 34 balls and bag two wickets, Tryon did not have much impact in the competition. Overall, she could manage only 79 runs in six games at a strike rate of 108.21 and bag three scalps in those outings. 8. Jess Kerr Jess Kerr is one the dependable fast bowlers in New Zealand’s cricketing circles. She has featured in 25 ODIs and bagged 32 wickets at an economy of 4.01. Coming to the shortest format, the 25-year-old has picked up 14 scalps in 22 matches at an economy of 5.62. Kerr has been New Zealand’s tone-setter with the new ball, making the ball talk at the start of the innings and providing her side with early breakthroughs. However, the ace pacer was not able to set the T20 World Cup 2023 on fire with her bowling displays. Kerr featured in four matches in the high-profile competition and could take only two at an economy of 6.25. Therefore, the Wellington-born could not make a great new-ball pairing with Lea Tahuhu, and hence, New Zealand could not pile on the pressure over the opposition. 9. Rajeshwari Gayakwad Rajeshwari Gayakwad has been a prominent figure in the international arena. She has featured in 64 ODIs and bagged 99 wickets at an economy of 3.63. Coming to the shortest format, the ace spinner has picked up 58 wickets in 55 games at an economy of 6.22. Gayakwad has been India’s strike force with the ball in the middle phases of the innings. She is an experienced customer and was counted upon to deliver the goods in the T20 World Cup 2023. However, the 31-year-old was not able to weave her magic and failed miserably in the tournament. Gayakwad featured in four matches and could not garner even a single wicket in the competition. Due to her inability to provide breakthroughs, India were not able to pick up wickets in clusters and hence, leaked runs throughout the innings. 10. Alana King Alana King has taken the international circuit by storm from the time she donned the national colours. She has featured in 15 ODIs and bagged 17 wickets at an economy of 4.25. When it comes to the shortest format, the 27-year-old has picked up 21 scalps in 22 games at an economy of 6.29. Alana wreaked havoc in the Women’s Big Bash League 2022-23 and took 17 wickets in 14 matches at an economy of 5.91. The ace spinner was in a rich vein as she entered T20 World Cup 2023 and it was anticipated that she would take the T20 carnival by storm with her performances. However, the Australian leg-spinner was a pale shadow of her vintage self in the marquee tournament and remained wicketless in the four matches she played. Following Alana’s poor outings, she was sidelined from the playing XI for the knockout stages of the competition. 11. Fatima Sana Fatima Sana is one of the exciting prospects in Pakistan’s cricketing circles. She has featured in 31 ODIs and bagged 44 wickets at an economy of 5.27. Coming to the shortest format, the 21-year-old has picked up 17 scalps in 24 T20Is at an economy of 7.68. Courtesy of her consistent performances, Fatima has become an important member of Pakistan’s white-ball set-up. And the team management decided to include the Karachi-born in the squad for the T20 World Cup 2023. However, the right-arm pacer was not able to impress with her performances in the tournament. Though Fatima took four wickets in as many games for the Women in Green, she was inconsistent with her lines and lengths and conceded runs at an alarming rate of 9.58.
