Sri Lanka fought injuries to key performers, but couldn’t get any momentum in their journey in CWC 2023. Everyone had England’s name down as one of their final four teams in CWC 2023. Even they thought so when they came to India, but what happened just left not only <a href="https://www.crictracker.com/cricket-teams/england/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">England</a> players, but their fans scratching their heads. They managed to lose out of the first 8 matches, not matching their stature as defending champions. Somehow, they saved face to win their last two matches and qualify for the Champions Trophy.&nbsp;&nbsp;<o:p>&nbsp;</o:p>

The Netherlands was selected as an associate nation for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023. They weren't anticipated to do much, but they surprised everyone by having some strong moments in this competition. They also won two games in the competition.<o:p></o:p>
They proved they had the number of South African teams, defeating them in Dharamshala and for a good measure, beating Bangladesh as well. They would be immensely proud of themselves in the end for turning in such performances. The Netherlands also showed what associate nations could do with more encouragement and more game time with top-tier teams.

Before the World Cup 2023 began, Pakistan was considered a prime contender to make it into the semi-finals. They started well by winning their first two matches. But then everything comes undone for Men in Green. Their huge loss to India in Ahmedabad made them spiral down in performance.&nbsp;<o:p></o:p>
Their most humiliating loss came to Afghanistan, who defeated them without breaking a sweat. Pakistan ended with five defeats (most for them in a single World Cup edition) and once again had to depend on other factors in hopes of semi-final qualification, which they couldn’t.

The surprise package of the entire World Cup 2023 proved to be Afghanistan. They could easily claim to be the second-best Asian team in the tournament. Despite losing their first two games, <a href="https://www.crictracker.com/cricket-teams/afghanistan/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Afghanistan</a> collected themselves to put up a historic win against England in Delhi. <o:p></o:p>
This led to three more top-tier wins over the Netherlands, Sri Lanka, and Pakistan. They even gave the eventual champions Australia a scare as well. This was the first time that they won four games in a single World Cup event.

New Zealand had a very topsy-turvy ICC World Cup 2023. They began the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 with four consecutive victories, and they appeared to be in the mood to win their first World Cup. But there was a moment when they were struggling to confirm a spot in the semi-finals. They did so by defeating Sri Lanka handsomely.<o:p></o:p>
In the semi-final, they faced a rampaging India, who blew them away in Mumbai. Overall, New Zealand performed very well and they were tested more than they were in the 2019 edition. They will be happy to unearth new talent like Rachin Ravindra as well.

It looked like South Africa would be the only team to give a rampaging India a run for their money at one stage of World Cup 2023. Apart from a surprising setback against the Netherlands, they dominated the group stage. With seven victories, they finished second on the table. They were the only ones that appeared to be unstoppable due to their performance.<o:p></o:p>
They posted the highest-ever World Cup team total and made 350-plus scores for fun in the tournament. But once again, they succumbed to their arch-nemesis, Australia in the semi-finals. Their batting faltered, but their bowlers fought hard, yet they lost and choked once more.

<a href="https://www.crictracker.com/cricket-teams/india/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">India</a> was the team to beat in the ICC World Cup 2023 as they rampaged through the league stage with comfortable and massive wins over opponents. They finished the league stage at the top and then also broke their jinx of losing to New Zealand in the knockout game. They beat the Kiwis in the semi-finals to become the first team in the tournament to qualify for the finals.&nbsp;&nbsp;<o:p></o:p>
However, both their luck and charm ran out in the final, as they were comprehensively beaten by Australia in Ahmedabad, breaking millions of hearts. Despite this loss, India had a tournament to remember where no other team came even close to them in terms of dominance.&nbsp;&nbsp;<o:p></o:p>

Australia got 0.5 points more than India, only because they managed to beat them in their own game in the final of the World Cup 2023 to become six-time champions. Australia began the competition with two consecutive defeats, and many questioned them, but when it comes to ICC tournaments, Australia knows how to rebound.<o:p></o:p>
The biggest example was the game against Afghanistan, where Australian players showed their resilience and mental toughness to win from a point of no return. They had their moments where it looked like they would falter, like the semi-final against South Africa. But in the end, Australia once again became champions. 4<o:p></o:p>
