In what has come as a major boost to Women’s cricket, the International Cricket Council has decided to increase the prize money by 320% for the forthcoming T20 World in Australia, early next year. The next year’s T20 World Cup winners in Australia will now receive US $1 million while the runners-up will get around US $500,000.
This is about five times more than the amount the winners and runners-up of the last T20 World Cup in the Caribbean received. Moreover, a cumulative 320 percent increment in the prize pot for the 2020 edition will see each of the ten participating teams receive a significant amount as compared to what they have been thus far. This is in line with improving the overall standards of women’s cricket throughout the game and not just about feeding the top-draw.
After ICC, Cricket Australia to put in extra share
So, keeping in track with all the developments, Cricket Australia announced on October 15 that it would match the prize money for the Southern Stars (Australia’s women’s team) for next year’s T20 World Cup on home soil to ensure parity with the men’s earnings. Cricket Australia will put in extra share to match the equivalent prize money for the Men’s tournament, up to an additional US $600,000 if they win the finals.
“We want to continue our commitment to equality by ensuring that any prize money earned by the Australian Women’s team in the T20 World Cup is the same as what is on offer in the men’s side of the tournament,” CA head Kevin Roberts said as quoted by CricketNext
“While there is no doubt we are starting to see financial progress for our talented cricketers, we still have a way to go and CA will continue to play a role in driving equality for our athletes,” he added.
The four-time T20 World Cup champions [2010, 2012, 2014 & 2018] will be the hot favorites going into the marquee tournament next year. Besides the T20 World Cup, the ICC has also increased the winning prize from $2 million to $3.5 million for the next edition of the 50-over World Cup in New Zealand in 2021.
