Cricket couple Alyssa Healy and Mitchell Starc become owners of a unique record
Healy is an integral part of the Australia Women's team.
The Australia Women’s team claimed a thunderous win by eight wickets against the England Women in the final match of the Women’s World T20 event in Antigua. It was also the fourth time in the tournament’s history that the girls from Australia lifted the prestigious title.
The Aussie wicketkeeper opener Alyssa Healy was announced as the Player of the Tournament as she scored 225 runs at an average of 56.25 in the six innings of the competition. Alyssa is married to Australian Men’s cricket team fast bowler Mitchell Starc and the cricketer couple created a unique record at the ICC tournaments.
Healy-Starc couple achieves a rare record
The leader of the Australian pace attack in the Test matches, Mitchell Starc was named the Player of the Tournament in the 50-over World Cup 2015, which was lifted by the Australian team. The left-arm fast bowler was the joint leading wicket-taker in the tournament with 22 wickets to his name, along with New Zealand pacer Trent Boult. And now after his wife Healy won the same award in Women’s World T20 2018 event, they became the first couple in the history of the game to win the best player award at an ICC tournament.
Starc and Healy got married in 2015 and they then became the only the cricketer couple to play Test cricket, after Roger and Ruth Prideaux, who represented England in the 1950s and 1960s, and Guy and Rasanjali de Alwis, who played for Sri Lanka in the 1980s and 1990s. Alyssa played a pivotal role in helping her side win the T20I competition for the fourth time. She mentioned after the victory that it was a complete team effort.
She was also part of the Australian Women’s side that lifted the title back in 2010 and remembered it as her favourite victory, but Healy did go on to say that the present win against England is also a memorable one. “Really proud. A team effort. I’ve just really enjoyed the freedom at the top and play some fearless cricket. Looking forward to play in the Big Bash and see if I can continue. Very special. We worked really hard to build on that culture. With the group’s that we’ve got there’s many more to come,” said Healy at the post-match presentation.
“(Winning World T20) 2010 is still my favourite, but this one might top it. It’s an amazing place to tour and the people here are really friendly. It’s a fun place to tour,”she added.
