Jhulan Goswami - Career Achievements and Records

Legendary Indian Women’s Cricket team pacer Jhulan Goswami has hung up her boots in international cricket after an illustrious career that spanned for 20 years. The tall right-arm medium-fast bowler made her debut for India way back in the year 2002 when she appeared in an ODI against England in Chennai. Having already quit T20 internationals in 2018, the seamer finally decided to call time from Tests and ODIs as well. She made one final bow against England at the home of cricket Lord’s in the recently concluded three-match 50-overs series which India won 3-0.

During her long and remarkable career, Goswami achieved many outstanding feats, especially in one-day internationals. The 39-year-old veteran is the leading wicket-taker in the format with 255 wickets to her name. With 43 scalps, the Bengal-born quick is also the highest wicket-taker in the ODI World Cups. Jhulan played ten major ICC tournaments for India (5 WC & 5 T20 WC) in her glorious and renowned career since 2002. She holds the record for the second-longest career in the 50-overs format that spanned 20y 261d.

Born in Chakdaha, a town in West Bengal, the fast bowler also grabbed the ICC Women’s Player of the Year award in the year 2007. Regarded as one of the greatest pacers of all time, Goswami also skippered the Indian side in 25 ODIs and 18 T20 internationals.

In terms of major titles, she won six Asia Cup trophies (four ODI and two T20 format) in her exceptional career. In a touching gesture, current captain Harmanpreet Kaur let Jhulan call the toss in her final appearance for team India against England in the final ODI at Lord’s, It’s certainly an end of an era as the world cricket will surely miss the services of one of the finest pace bowlers in the history of Women’s cricket.

255 – Jhulan Goswami is the leading wicket-taker in ODIs with 255 scalps to her name. South Africa’s Shabnim Ismail is second behind her with 191 wickets.

43 – Right-arm medium pacer Goswami is also the highest wicket-taker in 50-overs Women’s World Cups with 43 scalps. Australia’s Lyn Fullston is second on the chart for picking up 39 wickets in the tournaments.

23y 277d – Jhulan is the youngest player to pick ten wickets in a Test match aged 23y 277d. She achieved the feat against England in Taunton in the year 2006. Australia’s Betty Wilson is the second youngest (26y 120d) on this list.

2 – The 39-year-old seamer has the second longest career (20y 258d) in one-day internationals. India’s Mithali raj tops the chart for playing ODIs for 22y 274d.

10095 – Veteran pace bowler Jhulan also holds the record for delivering the most balls (9945) in ODI cricket. England’s Katherine Brunt is in the second spot for bowling 6847 balls.

355 – Tall seam bowler Goswami has taken the most wickets (355) in international cricket.

2 – Jhulan also has the longest career (20y 261d) in Test matches.

69 – Jhulan also had a safe pair of hands as she took 69 catches in her ODI career, which is the second-most. New Zealand’s Suzie Bates occupies the top position for grabbing 79 catches.

1 – Jhulan is the only Indian to score 1000 runs, pick 50 wickets and take 50 catches in one-day internationals. Overall, she is one of the six players to achieve this feat.

2007 – The Chakdah-born Jhulan won the ICC Women’s Cricketer of the Year award in the year 2007.

6/31 – Jhulan’s spell of 6/31 against New Zealand in 2011 remains the best bowling figures in an ODI innings in a losing cause.
