The year 2018 was a controversial one for Bangladesh as they managed to get themselves tangled in quite a few unwanted matters for which the team was severely criticised. From the cricketing perspective, they weren’t far behind by any stretch of the imagination. They played eight Tests and won three of them while the Tigers managed to win 13 out of 20 ODIs with a win-percentage of 65.

In the T20I format, Bangladesh were a tad lacklustre, though as he won only five out of their 16 matches. Two of those victories came in Lauderhill when they won a three-match against Windies in August. Shakib Al Hasan, Mahmudullah and Mashrafe Mortaza led the side with dignity in 2018. En route their journey this year, they also garnered a few records. We take a look at 10 of them.

Highest T20I team total

Back on March 10, 2018, Bangladesh scored their highest T20I team-total of 215 against Sri Lanka in Colombo in the Nidahas Trophy. The team, led by Mahmudullah, also turned up with a 200 plus score for the first occasion in the format, which came while chasing. Later this year, the Tigers, captained by Shakib Al Hasan, racked up 211 against Windies at the Sher-E-Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka.

Mushfiqur Rahim- first keeper with two double centuries

On November 12, 2018, 31-year-old Mushfiqur Rahim became the first wicketkeeper to score two double centuries in Test cricket. He scored 219 off 421 balls against Zimbabwe in Dhaka. It was also the fourth highest individual score by a keeper after Andy Flower’s 232 against India in 2000, Kumar Sangakkara’s 230 against Pakistan in 2002 and MS Dhoni’s 224 against Australia in 2013.

Nayeem Hasan youngest Test debutant to a Test five-wicket-haul

During Bangladesh’s first Test against Windies in Chittagong in November, Nayeem Hasan became the youngest debutant with a Test fifer at the age of 17 years and 355 days. He broke Pat Cummins’ record who achieved the record at the age of 18 years and 193 days in 2011 against South Africa. Nayeem also became the third youngest with a Test fifer after Nasim-ul-Ghani and Mohammad Amir from Pakistan.

Bangladesh enforce follow-on

The Tigers have plied their trade 112 Tests ever since November 2000 and it was only in their last encounter- the second Test against Windies in Dhaka in November- when they enforced a follow-on for the first time in their history of Test cricket. After scoring 508 in their first innings, Bangladesh bowled Kraigg Brathwaite and Co out for a paltry 111, therefore garnering a humungous lead of 397 runs.

Biggest Test victory

In the same match against the Caribbean team, Bangladesh raced to their biggest Test victory- by an innings and 184 runs, also their first ever innings-win- after bowling the Windies out for 213 in the second innings. It also helped them win the series 2-0. Their second most comprehensive victory came back in 2005 when they defeated Zimbabwe by 226 runs in Chittagong under the captaincy of Habibul Bashar.

Shakib Al Hasan- joint-most T20 five-wicket hauls

During Bangladesh’s second T20I against Windies in Dhaka in December, all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan picked up his fourth five-wicket haul in T20 cricket. Subsequently, he equalled David Wiese from South Africa and Lasith Malinga from Sri Lanka, both of whom also have as many T20 fifers. The figures of 5/20, which also earned him the Player of the Match award, was also his maiden fifer in T20Is.

Tamim Iqbal- first Bangladeshi to 4000 Test runs

Back in July, Tamim Iqbal became the first Bangladesh batsman to score 4000 runs in Test cricket. He achieved the record in the second innings of the opening Test against Windies in North Sound. The southpaw has also scored the most number of half-centuries (25), representing for his nation in 56 Test matches since January 2008. Later in December, Mushfiqur Rahim joined him in the 4000-run club.

Mominul Haque- Joint-highest Test centurion for Bangladesh

Back in November, Mominul Haque scored his eighth Test century against Windies in his 32nd Test match. The left-hander is currently level with Tamim Iqbal as Bangladesh’s leading century-maker. He also became the fastest batsman from the nation to score those many Test tons with Tamim in the second position, having scored them in his 43rd match against England in Dhaka in October 2016.

Mehidy Hasan opens both batting and bowling

During the Asia Cup final against India at Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Mehidy Hasan Miraz became the first from Bangladesh to open the bowling and batting in an international match. In that match, Mehidy scored 32 from 59 balls and built up a 120-run stand with Liton Das, who scored his maiden ODI ton, However, he was entrusted with only four overs in which he couldn’t pick up a wicket.

Shakib Al Hasan- Most wickets at a venue

Shakib Al Hasan racked up the record of most wickets at an international venue. The Jessore-born cricketer now has 199 wickets, playing in Dhaka. He surpassed the legendary Sri Lankan spin bowler Muttiah Muralitharan’s tally of 188 wickets at RPS Colombo. The 31-year-old Shakib made own the record in the second innings of the second Test against Windies when he picked up a four-wicket haul.
