Shakib Al Hasan explains on-field conversation with umpires

Angelo Mathews became the first player to be timed out in international cricket. After Sadeera Samarawickrama's dismissal, Mathews was on the pitch but called for a replacement as his helmet strap broke. Bangladesh's skipper, Shakib Al Hasan, appealed as Mathews was not yet prepared to face a delivery after two minutes, and Mathews was given out. The on-field umpires asked if Shakib was serious about his appeal, and the Bangladesh skipper was firm about his call.

Fiery encounter between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka ends without any handshakes

Bangladesh vs Sri Lanka is always a thrilling rivalry to watch. The same happened yet again when the two teams met in the ODI World Cup 2023 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi.

For the very first time in international cricket, a batter (Anjelo Mathews) was timed out for taking more time before facing any ball. This enranged Sri Lanka and the game was even more on edge then on.

Bangladesh won the match but the end of the match did not heal any remove any annoyance that both teams had over each other. in the end, both teams walked off the pitch without shaking hands as is the norm in all cricket matches.

Winning skipper Shakib Al Hasan said:

"When I won toss, didn't have any hesitation to bowl. We've trained here and know there's a lot of dew. It was a very good partnership, and would've loved to finish it off. One of our fielders came to me and said if you appeal now he'll be out. Then I appealed and the umpires asked me if I'm serious or whether I am going to take it back. It's in the laws. I don't know if it's right or wrong. I was at war and I had to take a decision to make sure my team wins. Right or wrong, there will be debates but if it is in the rules I don't mind taking those chances. That (altercation with Mathews) helped, bit more fight, normally fight doesn't come but happy it did today," Shakib said.

Thank you for joining us. See you all tomorrow. Goodnight!

Losing skipper Kusal Mendis said:

"Charith played a brilliant knock. But we were 30-40 runs short. Happy that some good young players coming through, and happy we have shown some promise in this tournament. In the future we'll have a good team. We had injuries to main players, also did some mistakes. Had we played better cricket, we would've had a better chance. It's very disappointing - when Angelo came to the crease. There were 5 second left. Then he found out strap of the helmet came off. It's disappointing umpires couldn't step in and make correct decision," Mendis said.

POTM Shakib Al Hasan said:

"They are two important players (Mendis and Samarawickrama), lucky to get those two wickets., There wasn't much for the bowlers, we bowled really well upfront. Spinners kept it tight. Both the spinners bowled really well. Bowling wins us more matches, fast bowlers were bowling really well up to the World Cup. We couldn't live up to our expectations but we knew that we can fight back, we had that mentality. We kept on believing and we kept on coming back and today it paid off. The ground dimension helped as well, the shorter boundary, there was a lot of pace on the ball, so I just had to use the pace, luckily it came off and from there on I never looked back. (Best performance came a little late?) I'd agree with that, we could have been consistent, that's one disappointment," Shakib said.

Bangladesh (BAN) and Sri Lanka (SL) will lock horns in the 38th match of the ongoing  ICC Men's Cricket World Cup at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi, on November 6, Monday. The Bangla Tigers are currently sagging in the ninth position in the ODI World Cup 2023 points table, having won only one game. After making a promising start to their campaign with a win over Afghanistan, the Shakib Al Hasan-led side fell short in the next six games. Their last defeat came against Pakistan, captained by Babar Azam, which saw the Bangla Tigers knocked out of the ongoing tournament.

Speaking of their game against Pakistan, Bangladesh decided to bat first after winning the toss. However, their decision backfired as they were limited to a below-par 204 runs as Pakistan's Shaheen Shah Afridi and Mohammad Wasim Jr. claimed three-wicket hauls. Mahmudullah top-scored for Bangladesh, scoring a crucial 56 off 70 deliveries.

Later, Mehidy Hasan Miraz picked up three wickets for sixty runs in his nine-over spell, though Bangladesh failed to defend their paltry total. Fakhar Zaman, who replaced Imam-ul-Haq during the game was vital for the Men in Green, as he hit a 74-ball 81-run knock and produced a significant partnership with his fellow opener, Abdullah Shafique, to hand his side a seven-wicket win. Shafique, on the other hand, hit 68 off 69 deliveries, including nine boundaries and two maximums.

Conversely, Sri Lanka have a slim chance of making it to the knockout stage. They have recently suffered two straight losses, one against Afghanistan and the other to India, respectively. The Kusal Mendis-led side are currently in seventh place with two wins from seven games.

The 1996 champions had a superb showing with the ball against India, even though they conceded a mammoth 357 runs. Notably, their batting performance was not up to par, as they were bundled out for 55 runs in 19.4 overs. Bangladesh will be looking to end their campaign on a positive note with a win in the next game while Sri Lanka will also be hoping to win in order to stay alive in the competition.
