Rohit says he can trust KL Rahul blindly for DRS
Indian captain Rohit Sharma opens up on DRS discussions among the group. He revealed that he blindly trusts KL Rahul and the bowlers as they've been brilliant with their decisions in the tournament so far. KL Rahul has not only been magnificent with the gloves but also with his decisions while being asked for a review by his teammates.
"I have left it to the bowler and the keeper (whether or not to take a review) to make that decision for me, and I gotta find the individuals I can trust and I know it can go the other way as well. We got one right and one wrong today," said Rohit in teh post-match presentation today.
Rohit Sharma said, "I've left the DRS call on bowlers and KL Rahul. I know I can trust them, especially KL. He's been brilliant". pic.twitter.com/2Y1MF3SgRi

Mohammed Shami adjudged POTM:
"Our bowling is in good shape and with the kind of rhythm (talking about the form of the pacers) that we are in, everyone is enjoying and everyone is happy for each other's success and more importantly, we are bowling as a unit and that's the result you are getting to see. I always try to bowl in good areas and be in good rhythm. In big tournaments, once the rhythm goes away, it's very tough to get it back. I always focus on hitting the good areas and length. Very happy (on becoming India's leading wicket-taker in World Cups) It's very important to be in rhythm in white ball cricket and hit the good areas. If you hit the good areas with the new ball you will get assistance off the pitch and for me length matters a lot. The kind of support we get from the crowd, I want to thank each and every one of them. We also get a lot of support whenever we travel outside India as well. The dressing room is in a very good space," Shami said.
Thank you for joining us on yet another thrilling day. What a win for team India. Alright, that's that then, see you all tomorrow!
Losing skipper Kusal Mendis said:
"I am very disappointed with the team's performance, with myself also. They bowled really well, little bit of seam movement under lights as well. Unfortunately, we lost the match. I wanted to bowl first because I felt the wicket would be slow in the first half. Madushanka bowled really well and we missed taking chances from Virat and Gill and sometimes those moments could change the game. Our bowlers did well in the middle overs. They bowled really well in the first 6 overs, and I think they deserve all the credit tonight. We have another 2 games and I hope we come back strong in the next game," Mendis said.
Winning skipper Rohit Sharma said:
"Very happy knowing that we have officially qualified now. Been a good effort from the squad, when we started off in Chennai. This was our goal, to qualify first and then obviously to be in the semis and the finals. The way we approached these 7 games, it was quite clinical. Everyone put in the effort and a lot of individuals have put their hand up. Was a good challenge to put runs on the board, and that's the kind of template you gotta have when you want to score that many runs. 350 on any pitch is a very good score and a lot of credit to the batting unit for taking us to that score and the bowlers did the job obviously. Shreyas is a very strong (in his mind) lad and today, as you saw, he went there and did what he is exactly known for and that is what we expect from him. Showed that he is ready to take the challenge that is in front of him and Siraj is another quality bowler for us and if he does that (making the new ball talk) things look different for us. He (Siraj) has got a lot of skills when he is operating with the new ball. Even Surya, for that matter, got us some crucial runs in the back end of the last game. To put in a performance back-to-back against England and now today, shows the quality of the seamers and if there is something in the conditions, they are quite lethal. All in all, it was pleasing to watch (bowlers dominating proceedings) and I hope they continue to do it that way. I have left it to the bowler and the keeper (whether or not to take a review) to make that decision for me, and I gotta find the individuals I can trust and I know it can go the other way as well. We got one right and one wrong today. They (South Africa) are playing some good cricket, and so are we. It's gonna be a great spectacle for the people out there and People of Kolkata are gonna enjoy that game," Rohit said.
Gill reveals meaning behind Shami's funny gesture towards dressing room
India beat Sri Lanka by a whopping 302-run margin. Indian bowlers made Sri Lanka dance to their tune after a relentless bowling display. Mohammed Shami picked up yet another fifer, and his gesture with the ball on his head went viral. After the game, Shubman Gill revealed the reason behind the funny celebration.
Shubman Gill said, "Shami gesture was for our bowling coach that's because he doesn't have any hair on his head". pic.twitter.com/99XQt4zOgp

Here's what Shubman Gill said after the match:
"The way they were bowling we were anticipating wickets. Siraj is always fired up. They were sensational. Has made job easier for us. I am the kind of person who doesn’t get nervous. I look to tackle it my own way at the start. Not full fitness. I am four kilos down from dengue in terms of mass and muscle weight. Honestly the discussion was to play in a compact manner. The odd ball was seaming. Hit the balls in our areas. You couldn’t get into a shell. Looked to put the pressure on the bowlers. I felt in the previous matches I got starts expect the last one. Sometimes you play a good shot and it goes to the fielder. We thought about rotating the strike today. I honestly don’t think it was a 400 wicket. We batted well to get 350. Shreyas was the key today. He batted superbly. That’s our bowling coach he (Shami) was gesturing," Gill said.

Here's what Shreyas Iyer said after the first innings:
“I think it was a pretty good wicket to bat, the ball was coming on and there was some nice bounce. I could settle for a while and then play my shots. It was magnificent to watch (on the partnership between Gill and Kohli), the way they took the singles, twos and the boundaries, they laid the platform for us. We were told that the odd ball was stopping and holding a bit, so it was a good partnership that they had and it helped us later on,” Iyer said.

Five overs gone, India are 25/1.

WHAT AN OVER BY CHAMEERA!
Another brilliant over from Dushmanta Chameera as he bowls another maiden. Virat Kohli looked to be in trouble on a couple of occasions as India are 14/1 after four overs.
Why are Sri Lanka players wearing blue and black armbands in World Cup match against India?
Sri Lankan players are wearing blue armbands as this match is to promote UNICEF's campaign, 'One Day For Children'. Meanwhile, they are also wearing black armbands to pay their homage to Uncle Percy, Sri Lanka's superfan, who passed away earlier in the week.

Pitch report:
It is the same pitch as the ENG v SA match - 64m and 69m square boundaries, the straight boundary is at 76m. There is a bit of shine and it means that it'll not slow down as the game progresses. The challenge for the bowlers is to hit a length around 6.5-7.1 metres, a hard length which has proved difficult to get away. It's hot and the pitch is full of runs, so the captain winning the toss might opt to bat first, reckon Ricky Ponting and Michael Atherton, in their pitch report
India playing XI:
Rohit Sharma (c), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul (wk), Suryakumar Yadav, Ravindra Jadeja, Mohammed Shami, Jasprit Bumrah, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Siraj
Sri Lanka playing XI:
Pathum Nissanka, Dimuth Karunaratne, Kusal Mendis (wk/c), Sadeera Samarawickrama, Charith Asalanka, Angelo Mathews, Dushan Hemantha, Maheesh Theekshana, Kasun Rajitha, Dushmantha Chameera, Dilshan Madushanka
Here's what Rohit Sharma said after toss:
"Would have batted first, good pitch to bat on. Obviously some assistance to start with but under lights there will be good assistance for our pacers. Great honour, great moment to lead the team (first match as as Indian captain at home ground). It's important for us to no get carried away by the performances we put in. Same team as the last game," Rohit said.
Here's what Kusal Mendis said after toss:
"We are going to bowl first. I think the pitch will be better for batting in the second part. Everyone did their best in the last few games. Hopefully, they will continue to do the same today. One change, Dhananjaya de Silva is not playing, Hemantha is playing," Mendis said.
TOSS UPDATE:
Sri Lanka won the toss and elected to bowl first.
GOOD AFTERNOON FROM MUMBAI!
The hosts India take on Sri Lanka in Wankhede Stadium tonight! A repeat of the 2011 final? The Rohit Sharma-led side will be hoping so while Sri Lanka can't afford to drop points as they are still in the race to qualify for the semi-finals.
India are all set to face Sri Lanka (SL)in the 33rd match of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 at Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium on November 2. The Men in Blue are in scintillating form, having triumphed in all six of their World Cup encounters, securing a commanding lead atop the points table with a perfect 12 points. With just three league-stage matches left, India's path to the semi-finals seems almost assured. They're certainly on a winning streak that's turning heads in the cricketing world.
The team boasts an abundance of game-changers, spearheaded by the skipper, Rohit Sharma. His scintillating performance against England, where he crafted a sublime 87 from 101 deliveries, earned him the Player of the Match accolade. Rohit has now assumed the mantle of the team's leading run-scorer, amassing an impressive 398 runs in six outings, boasting an average of 66.33 and a strike rate just shy of 120, underlining his prowess at the crease.
Close on Rohit's heels is Virat Kohli, despite a recent duck against England. Kohli has notched up a formidable 354 runs in the ongoing ODI World Cup 2023, with an impressive average of 88.50. Notably, he relishes facing Sri Lanka, boasting a stellar ODI average of 62.65 across 52 encounters against them. Shubman Gill, though yet to shine in this World Cup, holds immense batting talent, and on a placid pitch like this, a noteworthy innings from him is in the offing.
Sri Lanka couldnโt untangle themselves from Injury woes they suffered
The Sri Lankan Lions have endured a challenging ODI World Cup journey, suffering a demoralizing defeat to Afghanistan. Team India, aware of their recent dominance over Sri Lanka, enters this contest with a strong sense of confidence. Sri Lanka's campaign has veered off course, with the loss to Afghanistan plummeting them to the sixth position, compounded by a dismal net run rate of -0.275.
Sri Lanka's World Cup journey has been hampered by a series of injuries to key players, resulting in a lacklustre collective performance, except for their notable match against England. Kasun Rajitha, although expensive, has remained effective in securing wickets. The Lankan bowlers may find it challenging against India's formidable batting lineup, but early breakthroughs by Dilshan Madushanka and Rajitha could potentially exert pressure on the home team.
