Winning skipper Scott Edwards speaks

Scott Edwards: I think it was easy to be fair. We only had two days off. We were straight into travelling and into our plans. We were saying if we could get 220 plus, we were in the game. The bottom order guys got us to a very competitive total. The bowlers have been awesome. We have been superb on the field. Bit of everything. The system is getting more professional in Netherlands. We train incredibly hard. We always spoke at the start of the tournament that we aim for the semis. That remains our goal but we have a few tough games coming up.

Losing skipper Shakib Al Hasan speaks

Shakib Al Hasan: I thought we bowled very well. We should have restricted them to 160-170. We have been very poor with the bat throughout the tournament. This is as bad as it gets. It is very difficult from here. We need to take this on our chin. Throughout this tournament we have been struggling. Not sure what's going on the minds. Very unlike the Bangladesh team. The fans have been supporting us through our ups and downs.

POTM speaks

Paul van Meekeren (POTM): "Pretty special. We said we wanted to go for the semis, you need to win games. Very happy with how we bounced back after Australia. We were pretty confident. At the halfway mark of our innings we thought 230-240 [par score] and we got there. Dutt and van Beek kept it very tight in the first ten overs. Every training we come in and do 20 minutes of fielding. Bassy [Bas de Leede] got a good throw at the stumps tonight. Hard to pick an individual performance. Pure team performance."

Paul van Meekeren - That was special

Paul van Meekeren, the pacer, has been adjudged as Player of the Match. He took four wickets for just 23 runs, and really ran through the Bangladesh's batting line-up tonight. He seems delighted with the win and his performance.

Game over!!!!

Wow, the Netherlands have managed to pull off their second upset in this World Cup. The final wicket falls. They win by 87 runs, and it has been a historic win for sure. The bowling, the batting, the fielding – everything has been on point for them in today's game.

They move two positions up on the points table with four points to their name. What a game, what a win!!!!

Beauty

What a ball to finally get the ninth man out!!!

Mustafizur Rahman has fallen prey to a pearler, as Colin Ackermann gets his first for the night.  Mustafizur b Ackermann 20(35) [4s-2 6s-1]

After 42 overs, BAN are 142 for the loss of nine wickets. Shoriful Islam comes to the crease at no.11.

NED targeting the body

The Dutch bowlers are bowling a lot of beamers, as many wides have been conceded.

40 overs done

BANGLADESH are 140 for the loss of eight wickets, as the final ten overs drama begins. They need 90 more runs to win from 60 balls. Will this game go down to the wire?

Oct 28 2023 9:12 PM

Six

Effortlessly hit by Mustafizur Rahman, as he sends Ackermann packing for a maximum. Bangladesh won't mind adding a few more runs, to be honest.

The Netherlands and Bangladesh face each other at the iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata to play the 28th match of the ODI World Cup 2023 on Saturday, October 28. The Dutch side started their campaign with two losses against Pakistan and New Zealand. However, they bounced back to record a historic win against South Africa. They followed it up with a tight loss against Sri Lanka before Australia hammered them in their most recent match.

Scott Edwards will have to inspire his troops as the demoralising 309-run defeat against the five-time champions must have knocked the wind out of their sails. However, apart from the drubbing against the Aussies, the Netherlands have shown promise at various stages in all their matches. The top order hasn't been in great nick but the likes of Edwards, Sybrand Engelbrecht, and Logan van Beek have made useful contributions with the willow. Bas de Leede, who conceded a record 115 runs in his 10 overs against Australia, is the leading wicket-taker for the Dutch side with nine scalps in five games at 34.

Like the Netherlands, Bangladesh also have only one win in the five games they have played in the ongoing  ODI World Cup 2023. The 'Bangla Tigers' got off to a fine start as they blew away Afghanistan in their first game. However, they went on a four-match losing streak post that win.

The batters who were in form for Bangladesh before the tournament have not fired. Najmul Hossain Shanto, who entered the tournament as the leading run-getter for the Asian side this year, has scored just 74 runs in the five games at an average of 18.50. The frequent tinkering in the batting order has also not helped Bangladesh's cause.

Mahmudullah scored a fine century in the recent clash against South Africa but it only reduced the margin of defeat to 149. Shakib Al Hasan will have to lead from the front. He has a lot of knowledge of the conditions up on offer at the Eden Gardens, thanks to his time with the Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League (IPL). His teammates will look to pick his brains ahead of the clash and try to stop the run of losses.
