'Retirement is personal call but selection is selectors' job' - Aakash Chopra on Rohit Sharma's place in Sydney Test
"Will he drop himself in the team's interest? I am not saying retirement. I am saying sitting out the Sydney Test as he is unable to contribute," said Chopra.
The Indian team is going through a rough patch as it has won just one Test out of the last seven. They lost the home series against New Zealand by 3-0 and have provided an edge to the Australian team in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy, as the hosts are leading the series by 2-1.
With this, India's prospects of making it to the World Test Championship 2025 final look slim, and they might have to depend on other results if they lose the New Year's Test in Sydney, starting from January 3. Meanwhile, former India cricketer Aakash Chopra has highlighted that India captain Rohit Sharma, head coach Gautam Gambhir and chief selector Ajit Agarkar are under immense pressure.

"No captain would have done that thus far that he drops himself. Retirement is his personal call but selection is the selectors' job. However, as a captain, the selectors don't want to take that call. You have made him the captain for the entire tour. So you don't take that call mid-tour. So the call is now with Rohit Sharma," Chopra said on his YouTube channel.
"Will he drop himself in the team's interest? I am not saying retirement. I am saying sitting out the Sydney Test as he is unable to contribute. It will be a fair call to take. But will he take that call and if he doesn't, will the selectors take that call mid-tour? Gautam Gambhir and Ajit Agarkar, guys you are on the spot this time," Chopra added.
