Ahead of the Boxing Day Test against Pakistan at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, Alex Carey expressed his desire to make a return to white-ball cricket. The stumper-batter mentioned that he was in good form with the bat earlier in the year but a rough patch just before the ODI World Cup 2023, ruled him out of contention as he played the opening game against India in Chennai before Josh Inglis replaced him in the playing XI. However, the 32-year-old is now eager to work hard and get better in order to get back into the scheme of things.
Speaking about the same, former Australia cricketer Adam Gilchrist stated there is no harm in him wanting to get back to white-ball cricket. He mentioned that Carey’s practice won’t affect his red-ball cricket or it will not drain him mentally and he believes that it’s terrific that the cricketer is eager and hungry to play more games for Australia.
“I actually like the fact that he has spoken so openly about his desire to get back into that white ball team. I see no reason for him to shut down that goal. I don’t think it changes anything in his life by the way he goes about his cricket, the way he trains. I don’t think he sits at home and worries about it, so it is not draining him of mental energy and perhaps affecting his Test cricket. I think it is terrific. He is hungry to play for Australia as much as he possibly can and if it never happens again, it won’t be through a lack of trying,” said Gilchrist on Fox Cricket’s The Follow On podcast.
The decision by the selectors to go with Inglis in the World Cup was justified: Gilchrist
The former cricketer backed Josh Inglis, who has done a good job in the mega tournament in India. He congratulated the selectors for doing a good job but added that Carey too could have been effective.
“The decision by the selectors to go with Josh Inglis in the World Cup was justified. He contributed nicely to that World Cup win. But I think Alex Carey would have done a very serviceable job there as well. Credit to the selectors,” Gilchrist said.
