England all-rounder Sam Curran has been appointed as the captain of Surrey’s men’s team for the upcoming Vitality T20 Blast 2025. The 26-year-old, who has been with Surrey since his young years, will take over the responsibility from Chris Jordan.

Curran’s promotion to captaincy is the byproduct of his successful leadership stints in franchise cricket. He has previously led Punjab Kings (PBKS) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and recently captained the Desert Vipers to the ILT20 2025 final. The southpaw has previously led Surrey for three games in the 2023 Vitality Blast in Jordan’s absence. Notably, he has represented the club since U15s and later captained the U17 side.

Curran's T20 stats are impressive, with over 4,000 runs in 268 matches at an average of 23.8 and a strike rate of 135.15. His tally includes 24 half-centuries and a century, with five of those fifties coming in the IPL. he registered his maiden T20 century in last year’s Blast against Hampshire at the Kia Oval. With the ball, he has picked 254 wickets at an economy of 8.80, including four five-wicket hauls. His performances in the Vitality Blast have been equally remarkable, scoring 1,514 runs in 79 games at a strike rate of 136.27, alongside 73 wickets at an economy of 8.36.

"I am deeply honoured and proud to have been appointed Surrey's T20 captain. It is a privilege to lead such a great group of players and to continue representing this iconic club. I look forward to leading our team and will do everything I can to live up to the standards and expectations that Surrey prides itself on. I am very determined to deliver trophies and try to replicate what has been achieved in the County Championship the last few years to make the Members and fans proud," Curran said as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.

It's a great opportunity for him to put his mark on the team: Alec Stewart

In 2022, the Northampton-born was the Player of the Tournament during England's victorious ICC T20 World Cup campaign. However, he has struggled to find a spot in England’s white-ball setup since the 2023 World Cup, missing out on several series and tournaments, including the recent ICC Champions Trophy. Surrey’s High Performance Cricket Advisor, Alec Stewart, mentioned that this is the right time for Curran to take over.

"I'd like to thank Chris Jordan for his three years as captain of the T20 side. He led the team to consecutive appearances at Finals Day and will remain a key part of the side on and off the field. CJ is one of the most senior players in the team and is greatly respected by everyone at the Club.

This is the right time for Sam to take over as the captain with where he's at in his career. It's a great opportunity for him to put his mark on the team and help to take us that one step further to deliver silverware. Sam has shown his leadership qualities already both at Surrey and in the IPL and he will bring a huge amount to the role," Stewart said.
