Losing crucial matches in a major tournament has become a trend in Indian cricket at this time. On the other hand, India is pretty much dominating in the majority of the bilateral series that they play. A lot of fans previously pointed this out and after losing to Sri Lanka in the super four of the Asia Cup, former India international Wasim Jaffer is also advocating the same thought.
Jaffer believes that India fails to perform under pressure in the major tournaments. Rohit Sharma, the captain of the Indian team also admitted in the post-match press conference that there’s a lot of pressure in the major tournaments as they are playing different teams every now and then. It is something that doesn’t happen in bilateral series.
Jaffer focused on the same matter and added how India once again failed to score 15-20 runs more while batting first. Losing wicket in the middle has been a problem for team India and even after having proper batters till number seven, India is not being able to take advantage of that.
“When we are put under pressure outside the bilateral series, we succumb under pressure. The same thing happened in the T20 World Cup and again in the Asia Cup. We are far too good in bilateral series but when we come under pressure and in a must-win game, we fail to perform. Especially against the new ball. We did put up a good score in the last two matches. However, we scored 15-20 runs less because of the middle order. Even in the last nine balls, Bhuvneshwar was batting with Ashwin because we lost wickets in the middle,” said Jaffer on 'BatBricks7 presents Run Ki Runneeti' on CricTracker.
India is not being able to take wickets with the new ball: Wasim Jaffer
he team has failed to pick wickets early in the game and this again has been a problem for the Indian team in the recent tournaments, be it against Pakistan in the T20 World Cup or their last match against Sri Lanka in the Asia cup. With that, the pressure completely falls on the entire team which they fail to cope up with.
“We did post good scores in both the matches but we are not able to pick wickets with the new ball. When we fail to do so, it becomes easy for the opponent. We should be a bit aggressive and I feel we lack a wicket-taking option at the moment,” said Jaffer in the show.
