Arrest warrant issued against Shakib Al Hasan over INR 3 crore cheque fraud, three others involved

Cricketer Shakib Al Hasan was missing from the teamsheet when Bangladesh announced their squad for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2025. The Najmul Hossain Shanto-led side will be going without the star all-rounder into a multinational tournament for the first time since his debut. It is understood that Shakib wasn't in contention for a spot in the side due to a recent examination that resulted in putting a ban on Shakib's bowling.

If that weren't enough, the cricketer has been hit by another setback, as the Bangladesh international has been charged with an arrest warrant by the Dhaka court on Sunday, January 19. The warrants were issued to Shakib and three others in relation tocases related to bounced cheques at an IFIC Bank branch in the capital city, as reported by the Daily Star, Bangladesh.

The four including Shakib were expect to present themselves in front of the court on Sunday, but failed to do so, which in turn, led to Mohammed Ziaudur Rahman, Dhaka's Additional Chief Metropolitan, to pass the order to issue an arrest warrant against them.

However, this is not the first time that Shakib has been charged with summons. In December 2024, a court in the national capital had asked the cricketer to make an appearance in the court after the bank's relationship officer had filed the case in the matter related thereto. It was further reported that the star cricketer and three others had dishonoured the cheque payments amounting to Tk 4,14,57,000 (roughly INR 3 crore).

Shakib's poor run of form

Apart from these legal troubles, Shakib has not had a great time on the field. In the five Test matches he played last season, he could only score 155 runs at an average of 19.37 and could only take 13 wickets.

His stats in the shorter format were not impressive as well. Only managed to score 169 runs in 12 T20Is averaging only 16.90 and took only nine wickets in 2024. The 37-year-old three-time Asia Cup finalist has not played a single match in 2025 this season.
